Smaller Indiana

Making people and ideas findable

"Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers.” ~ Charles W. Eliot

I found several Groups for Smoosiers who enjoy reading on the Smaller Indiana Group Links Google doc.

Indy Business Book Club Comments for this group are private so I'm not sure what book(s) they are currently reading (it appears they meet monthly to discuss a book) Note on the group page says, "This club is currently accepting new members."

Millionaire Mind Fan Club Club member Laura M. Rodebaugh says, "This group is great - I look forward to learning more about it! The discussion posts are awesome. Very informative and interesting. I've enjoyed reading more about the principles of living your dreams, pursuing your passions and being responsible for yourself." (from the comment wall)

Purple Cows Club member
David Mark says, "Just like the cow says, "Smaller Indiana isn't so small when you're remarkable!". This group's intention is to build a remarkable you."

Women Only Book Club About the club: "This is a monthly meeting for Women that want to read books, make friends, hang out and have fun!"

I love to read, yet I've never been a member of a book club. If you are, or have previously been, a member of a book club (here or elsewhere) feel free to share your experience(s) with other Smoosiers. What do you like most about the club? Why did you join? How much time do you spend preparing for the club and/or involved in club activities?

After searching for a book club that I could join, I realized that I should just start my own. So, the Women Only Book Club was born in November 2008. I wanted to create a book club for women to feel comfortable and safe to share books, laughs, tears, dreams and friendship. I posted that I was starting a book club on Facebook and on Smaller Indiana. I had several friends join right away. Then they invited neighbors and friends of theirs to join too. Now we have 13 members.

I wanted to hold the meetings in a setting outside of someone's home. That way, it wouldn't be a hassle for anyone. I discovered that all Old National Bank Branches have a community room that you can rent for free, even after hours. It is a wonderful room with a kitchenette, leather high back chairs around a huge table and a restroom. We meet once a month at 6:30 pm. We take turns selecting the books each month. When it is your turn to pick the book, you are also in charge of bringing snacks for the entire group.

Our group is now on a waiting list for new members, we want to keep the group intimate and not grow too much. But, we do invite ladies to follow along and read with us on Smaller Indiana. They can also post comments and suggest future reads for the group.

I am so happy I started this book club. We have all enjoyed discussing books together and building friendships. Members of the group have had two babies born and a wedding so far. Some of us went as a group to see the musical, Wicked together. And we all plan on going to see the movie, New Moon when it comes out next month. Good books and good friends - that is a successful book club!

Kristin thanks for sharing and pointing out the groups we have for edifying our lives. While I have never joined a book club for in person meetings I believe the value of having others with the same vocabulary, the same information to reference for jokes and life experience is some of the stuff that connects us to others. With the work that I have been doing with the Millionaire Mind, that connection and similar language is at the heart of my motivation to lead the group and the event. I hunger for a net of people who will hold me accountable to the higher standard that is set forth in the book.

Tony Scelzo says this about the 'Secrets of the Millionaire Mind' book:

Tony of Rainmakers

and you can view a sample of flash cards from the book here:

I sheepishly admit, The Purple Cow Group isn't really remarkable (as a group). The individuals are powerful people, but the group's content and activity is thin. I started the group and take responsibility to manage it. However, I'd like some help from its members. Please take ownership and make it your. Be a contribution. Inspire us. I don't suppose I could get some interest from just a single individual to team up with me and make this group truly remarkable?

We could all get together and have a Creative Brain Trust - a place to be inspired, share ideas and grow. I'm all for it!
