Smaller Indiana

Making people and ideas findable

I am in love with my community. I’m not just talking about my community of Indianapolis. I am speaking of my ENTIRE community…my family community, my social media community, my business community, my Rainmakers community, my music community, etc. I feel a deep sense of responsibility to lift these people up.

That being said, it absolutely cracks me up to hear someone in the social media community talk about how social media conversation is nothing new, it’s just regurgitation of old stuff that has been said a thousand times throughout history. Wow. That’s all I can say…until I say more. Continue to Lindsay Manfredi's Blog

I agree that people should learn the medium.

Absolutely, it is different! Meaning as well feedback is different via different mediums, hands down. Let's take the JFK/Nixon election for example. Do think the election would have turned out differently if the medium would have only been radio? Being it was the first time an election had been on the medium of television, viewers had a chance to actually SEE the candidates. Nixon had an extremely persuasive tone and radio provided him a platform of power due to this articulation strength as well as authoritive tone. JFK was not nearly as persuasive becuase he was not as articulate and his tone was not as strong (paralanguage). However, television provided the platform for us (them...since I wasn't born yet), to SEE the candidates. JFK was a natural, young, and had new ideas. Nixon was a stiff on television, therefore, not as persuasive. (That is a quick, not as researched of an answer.)
Social media is yet another platform. We may discuss similar ideas online, but when you're in my presence, there is a totally different energy that would come from me. When you actually MEET people that you have an online relationship with, it changes the dynamic.
AND to answer your question, yes, I am most likely regurtitating information in defense of social media. :-)
The entire point of the blog was to explain that regurgitation is okay. Messages should be spread because new people enter new mediums on a daily basis. They have to learn too! :-)

Are you regurgitating information in defense of social media? *sorry, I couldn't help myself?*

Not to get into a McLuhan discussion here, but are you saying that the conversation occurring via the medium of online social media are different than the conversation that I would have in person. I know that I would not be posting this question w/o this network and therefore the opportunity for me to post this question would not otherwise be here, but if I heard you say this in person--I'd ask you the same question.
