Smaller Indiana

Making people and ideas findable

If you haven't seen it already, Paula Henry who runs one of the most popular real estate blogs in Indy got the spotlight on Forbes! Paula made the news when she argued with MIBOR on whether or not Real Estate Agents could each others' listings and get them indexed by Search Engines.
The online storm pushed the issue onto the agenda of the National Association of Realtors, the professional organization for real estate agents, and they reinforced the ruling of Henry's local board. In mid-May, the NAR invited Henry to Washington, D.C., to speak on the issue at their Mid-year Legislative Meetings & Trade Expo. Though her protests were ultimately shot down, her objection to the rule had received widespread recognition. A single post had propelled her from local blogger to national advocate in a matter of weeks. from Forbes.
Congratulations to Paula! This is a great case study on how one person can make a huge difference with social media.

And BTW: I think it's absolutely scandalous that MIBOR won't let agents build out targeted sites with each others' listings. They're already losing to aggregators. Seems to me that it's another industry dying with the Internet and trying to bleed every last penny out of its customers. If agents could drive up their own sites with listings, they may not need MIBOR!

Full disclosure: Paula is one of my clients.

Doug -

Thanks much for lending your voice to my cause. Being featured on Forbes was an honor and is truly indicative of the power of social media. When I started blogging, they didn't even call it social media.

In defense of MIBOR, they do offer great benefits to Realtors and the community. They responded to the complaint of a local broker who didn't like the fact my broker and I were gaining traction in the SERP's, threatening his top position. It was their response to the complaint which I disagree with.

More important than what the issue of indexing means to the Realtor and their ability to compete with third party aggregators, is, how it affects our ability to truly market our clients property and what is best for the client. That's a post I have already written, though. :)

thanks again!
