I'm having a great time learning so much about my fellow SIer's. I guess I'm semi-popular because I was tagged by two wonderful women -
Lisa Ralph and
Cissi Sherlock. So, it's my turn now.
1. I was born at a very early age. Seriously. My dad was in the Army and met my mother in Germany. She is a native Austrian. (Austria - not Australia) I was named after both of my grandmothers and my first name, Theresia, is the Austrian spelling. (No, I'm not going to tell you my middle name.) Since dad was an Army dude, we were stationed in Niagara Falls, NY when I was born. Oddly enough, I've never been to the falls, and I was eight years old before I realized my brother was lying to me. I really wasn't born IN the falls, just the town!
2. We lived in Germany for six wonderful years before my dad was transferred to Columbia, SC in 1976. It is where I call home and my family still lives there.
3. I was an artsy-fartsy person in my youth. I was in the marching band, honors choir, performed in school plays and then went on to do community theater and modeled locally. I even had an agent in New York. Obviously, I didn't make it but I'm not bitter. Really, I'm not. Oh, and I was also a magicians assistant. We were performing a routine where he elevates me on a broom. (No, I'm not going to tell you the secret. I'd have to kill you.) We were doing a show in Charleston, SC the night before Hurricane Hugo struck. Just as he elevated me, the power went out. I'm stuck hanging on a broom in mid air in a raging pre-hurricane. That was fun.
4. I married young - 23. Yep, that was too young for me to be getting married. I didn't have a clue who I was or what marriage was about. I got divorced 12 days before my 30th birthday. God has blessed me with a mulligan and the most wonderful, amazing, kind-hearted, God-loving man on the planet. I am truly a blessed wife.
5. After 8 years in the health insurance industry, I fulfilled my dream of becoming a journalist. My original goal was to be the female version of Bob Costas. But I came to learn that the only thing he and I have in common is our height. He's still the greatest but I'm a story-teller; he's a stats genius. So, I got into news. I was twice Emmy nominated and won two other media awards in my first six months in the biz. Two years after starting, I landed in the number 8 market - Washington, DC.
6. I am a witness to 9/11. I was across the street from the Pentagon when it was struck. I covered the events from there and from New York for CNN, Reuters Television and CBN News. (I was a freelancer.) I was eventually diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder and, by the grace of God, I am doing well now. This has given me the opportunity and pleasure of working with others who have been through traumatic experiences, including war veterans.
7. Since leaving the TV news side of journalism, I am a print journalist. I've had the pleasure of covering the motorsports industry for the last 7 years and meeting some of the greatest racers in our day. If you ever find me saying, "Huh?" when we're in conversation. It's probably because I have some hearing loss in my left ear due to attending too many races and not wearing ear plugs. Wear hearing protection, friends! You'll thank me later.
Thank you for taking the time to get to know me!
