Smaller Indiana

Making people and ideas findable

It's been a while since I've contributed to my Smaller Indiana page, so I decided that it was way overdue this morning. I have had the good fortune to have some wonderful evenings this weekend and I thought I'd mention them.

Through the good graces of my friend Tom Hume, the owner of Hume & Services, I attended the Techpoint MIRA awards evening Friday night. Smaller Indiana's Pat Coyle was the Emcee and the place was packed with brilliance in Indiana technology. It was a fine evening of recognition for individuals and companies based in Indiana that have contributed to innovation and technological advancement over the past year or more. It was my first opportunity to attend this event and I was impressed with the spectrum of advancement and the accomplishments of many of these companies. It made me want to be a part of each of them as they champion the technological introductions or engagement to industries across the board.

On Saturday evening I was pleased to join some friends for an evening of music and fun in Bloomington. We listened to some live swing jazz, dined and enjoyed each other's company. Several of the folks were from Cook Medical and while there was some conversation regarding general work, the focus was much more aligned with music, art, literature, travel and sport.....at least at my end of the various tables. It was a great group of people and a much enjoyed time of catching up with some and getting to know others. It was also a very eclectic group of individuals with diverse backgrounds, different nationalities and unusual professions.

In the process of my Saturday night, I had several drinks mistakenly poured all over me. It's not the first time I've had something spilled on me, but it is the first time that I have had something cover me from head to toe and hit a couple of those folks around me, as well. Our waiter was a very nice fellow who was highly apologetic and obviously felt horrible about it. For me, it was a bit uncomfortable, but the restaurant supplied towels and a t-shirt and did what they could do to bring a comfort level back. You know, accidents happen and I know that I'm very capable of pouring both food and drink on someone, so we managed quite well. In fact, it allowed us to have an even more memorable evening and gave us another thing leading to banter and jokes.

I hope that the business people that may read this get an opportunity to look over the impressive list of companies involved in the MIRA awards and take the time to congratulate those in contention. They are involved in bringing amazing products and services to the forefront in Indiana. I also hope that those among you might have an enjoyable evening with friends and music. And, if you do, remember that having drinks poured on you gives you the moment to realize what's important in life. You might look and feel foolish, you might have a level of discomfort and you might get the chills from the ice down your back. But you might also take it in good spirit, realizing that it was unintentional and it is really funny in the moment, and not let it inhibit a great night!
