Making people and ideas findable

Today I attended the 22nd Annual Start with Art Luncheon at the convention center. Not only was I very impressed by the turnout and record setting funding generated from the event, I was wowed by Colonel Dean M. Esserman.

Colonel Esserman is the Chief of Police from Providence, Rhode Island. What does a Providence, Rhode Island Chief of Police have to do with art? Well, quite a lot actually. You see, Colonel Esserman is a contributor and promoter of getting to kids early. His philosophy is to take a tough stance against those that commit crimes, but also to be supportive and inspiring by introducing them to life outside a broken home.

One area that Colonel Esserman feels contributes to a reduction in crime is introducing kids at an early age to art. This can be museums, visual arts, performance arts, music, etc. He has first-hand experience of children moving from a life of crime to new opportunities and new outlets for expression.

It's a very cool concept and one that seemed timely considering the mayor's early announcement for reduction in art funding. Mark Miles was there on the mayor's behalf and relayed with confidence that the mayor said he "gets it."

One thing cannot be denied, Indy's art scene is vibrant and contributes a significant stream of revenue to the city's economy (some $468 million accoring to the Arts Council of Indianapolis). There are so many things to do and see in Indy. Now if only I could get out to more of them... perhaps finding babysitters for under $10/hr would be a good start.

Matt:

Thank you for the comment and insight on the Start with Art luncheon. I appreciated learning about this event from your post.

Your comment's about Col. Esserman's remarks made me think of the value of breaking down the silos which tend to separate one's thinking about community (public safety and the arts are related). Col. Esserman's remarks are consistent with a holistic approach to community life.

Americans for the Arts conducted research of more than 850 arts-based community development programs in the United States. The purpose of the research was to determine which elements have contributed to the success of existing programs. Consistent with Col. Esserman's ideas, the research suggests successful programs create a safe environment which serve as a refuge from community problems, encourage family involvement, and offer comprehensive services.

The conclusion is community-based arts programs are successful in some or all of these ways in that they build community, especially by "building innovative partnerships between diverse sectors of the community". The arts play an intervention role in their ability to raise one's self-esteem. Positive self-esteem is a bulwark against the negative elements which impact our lives.

Thanks again for the insights and the opportunity for reflection.
