Making people and ideas findable

July 17, 2008

Dear Jon,

You asked that I put my experiences in our association in writing.
It’s been six weeks. I’ve lost 2 chins! Love it!
You’ve got me doing machines and weights I never dreamed I could do. You always push me. Never to pain.
At 71, I’m aware this body is loaned. I’m aware I’ll have to give it back soon. You make me see I honor Creation by continuing to work to strength.
Your clients span 50 years in age…20 year olds, 70 year olds. You treat us all with the same respect and professionalism. Your spirit infects everyone.
Your voice is in my head. “Breathe!” “You’re wearing your shoulders as earrings!” Love that last one.
You are always doing “the next right thing.”
You bring added value to life.
Your client,
Your friend,

Pat Shinaver

Gaining Perspective
I was just realizing today how valuable Jonny's input into my life is. I am a recovering perfectionist, so I still have a tendency to be hard on myself unnecessarily. Just like how I feel like I've blown my diet for the past week and a half. I was determined to press through, but my negative mindset was definitely affecting my progress for getting back in the groove on my personal nutrition. Jonny's encouragement and open-minded perspective today really helped me release a lot of the negativity I was holding over myself, and I really feel to let go of the guilt and just re-start eating reasonably without concern that I've gone backwards on my goals. In fact, to hear Jonny tell it, I've still been making progress all this time, even when I thought I had undermined my own fitness plans. What I want from this fitness program is more than just a lean, strong body. I want a strength in my life and character, and gaining a realistic perspective on what that looks like and functions like is incredibly valuable to me. Thanks, Jonny, for all you do - giving of yourself to be that positive inspiration for me that truly does make or break my fledgling fitness and nutrition regimen. I've done plenty of training before - complete with someone writing on a paper and telling me how to workout - but I recognize the many extra things you do for me that makes up the real undergirding that has already shown me the most progress I have ever made fitness-wise in my life![Editor's Note: I know that Jonny reads my blog, but this is not a "Jonny commercial" or fodder to enlarge his head. Just my real thoughts driving home from the gym.]

I joined Tri-Corps because I wanted to get back into shape - great shape. I have an athletic history, but I haven’t been consistently fit for a few years. When I started in May I had not exercised in 9 or 10 months. On July 22nd, I ran in a marathon relay event with Jonny and two other teammates. That’s 26.2 miles between 4 people. I ran faster than I had in years. In fact, I had never run a race like that ever before. Jonny really geared me up for success. I really enjoy Jonny's enthusiasm for life and fitness. He has helped me by actually getting in there and participating in most (if not all) of the workouts right alongside me. I am certain that I will break through plateaus that have previously been insurmountable because of his discipline, dedication and joy in coaching and encouraging. We are working on a new 'season' now more focused upon strength training and burning off fat. I'm psyched about it! (Yes, I am a psychologist. Really!) I can express my own intensity and goals in the Tri-Corps training environment, which is important after helping others with their own struggles. Thanks Jonny!

I am the mother of four young children, ages 9, 7, 5, and 2 ½. Coming from an athletic background, I am no stranger to exercise and was able to lose the weight from my first three pregnancies without too much trouble. Baby number four was a different story! I knew what to do, but the demands of my family at the time kept me from focusing on my own personal well being.

I tried to get into an exercise routine many times, but it seemed that each time I did, something would come up to throw me off my training schedule. A sore muscle, a sick child, swim lessons, play dates, soccer practice... the list goes on. The last excuse I had was a good one, though, and I was determined that it would be my LAST. In August of 2006, my four year old son and I were struck by a car while crossing the street in front of our Carmel home. My leg was broken and I was looking at surgery and nearly a year of rehabilitation. Now the option to exercise had been taken away from me.

For 11 months I healed, physically and emotionally. I spent a lot of time thinking about what I wanted to do when I came out of this. I thought about how, somewhere in the midst of all the craziness, there would have to be time for me.

The accident taught me that, like many mothers, I had forgotten that taking care of myself was just as important as taking care of my family. I also found that sometimes there are things that we just can’t do on our own. Though it broke my heart to see our friends and neighbors step in to help my husband keep our home and family running, I learned a precious lesson. It’s okay to ask for help.

In July, on the recommendation of a friend and with renewed determination, I began training with Jonny. The first time I met him, I knew he was different. The first time we worked out together, I understood ‘why’. He takes a personal interest in his teammates. He is right there with me, feeling every exercise, every stretch, every mile. More than a personal trainer, Jonny is my coach and my mentor. His motivation is what helps me to get up a little earlier to make time to take care of myself, before I begin taking care of my family. He never forgets to remind me that this is about ME, about getting what I want from my workouts, what I want in my results.

After only six weeks with Jonny, I am stronger and healthier than I was before the accident. My leg is rebuilding and my motivation is strong. On September 8, I will be running (that’s right, RUNNING!) in a 5K trail run with Jonny and some of my teammates. Every workout brings new strength and a new commitment to go the distance this time.
For all of you moms who have put everyone else first, I encourage you to consider taking some time to take care of you. Find a sport you enjoy, lose the rest of that baby fat, run a marathon, GET CRAZY! Your husband and children will love your energy! Take it from me. With a little help, you can reach your fitness goals! Call Jonny!!
