9 Tips for Working on Software Projects with Freelancers

Working with a freelance software developer is a bit different than working with a salaried software developer. A focus on results and a limited budget means the project needs to run smoothly from the start. I've written 9 tips to help you as the project sponsor: 1. Understand the problem and have a vision. 2. Trust your developer to focus on solutions. 3. Understand your role and be courageous. 4. Don’t rush the planning stage. 5. Don’t linger in the planning stage.… Continue

Hierarchy of the Successful Independent Software Developer

In a 1943 paper, Abraham Maslow first proposed the Hierarchy of Needs. These were the needs he felt all people needed to fulfill, starting at the most basic and moving up as the needs below were met. The needs, progress from basic selfish needs to outwardly expressed ones. This progression moved through physiological, safety, belonging, esteem and ended at self-actualization.… Continue

Overnight Success

I'm working on a web application in my spare time. Some days that means little programming time time, others more. The hardest part is the times where nothing seems to be moving forward - the grunt work can be depressing. It is easy to look at software companies that have had phenomenal success in the past few years and feel a little jealous. Or is it? Jonathan Fields wrote about so-called overnight… Continue

Entrepreneurship

I've been a freelance software developers for 2.5 years. When I started out on my own in 2006, I set a three phased approach: 1. Subcontracted software development - I would work for consulting companies (as I had for the previous 7 or so years) as a subcontractor on-site for clients. 2. Freelance Software Development - build a base of clients and develop projects for them. This would be done off-site from the client so I could maintain better use of my time and eliminate commuting. 3. Independ… Continue

Do Churches Fear the Internet?

Earlier this year I started a blog called Christ Centered Dad where I write about Faith, Family and Fun. It was something I had considered doing for a while, but was nervous about opening up about my faith. After all, I'm a messed up human being... and Google will remember that as long as this world exists. Many of my own fears about a faith-based blog is shared by churches and their online presence. I think there's some big reasons the church (as an… Continue

What I hope to get out of BlogIN

I’m not sure how the BlogIN event is going to go this Saturday (2008 April 26) since it’s being run in a BarCamp fashion. There is no agenda, it will be set by the attendees at the time. For eight years I’ve been a blogger (more or less), but I’ve never had success in my consistency or the number of readers on my site. Maybe I’m just not that good of a self-promoter, or perhaps my blogging schedule doesn’t keep people "tuned in". Whatever the reason, I see myself attending the BlogIN with more q… Continue
