Cubs Struggle Through Week 3

This was far and away the worst week of this first month of the MLB season for the Chicago Cubs. They managed their lowest total run production, 23 runs, even though they played one more game than they did last week. With the majority of the runs coming in two games, it made things even worse as they dropped four of six on the week. PITCHER OF THE WEEK - Rich Harden is far and away my pitcher of the week. He was the only Cub starter to get any run support, and he got it in both his starts. Of t… Continue

Can Cubs Cajun Connection Carry Chicago to Championship

I am a huge Cubs fan. HUGE! I follow them daily and blog about their success and failure as a contributor to the National Sports Review. A couple years ago I made the mistake of saying I would take Ryan Theriot over Alex Rodriguez as my shortstop. I have a thing for hard nosed little guys that play hard. I was one in college, admittedly with much less talent than Theriot. I was harassed to no end, because at the time Theriot was… Continue

Insurance Companies Can Help You Go Green

Going green is a popular topic these days. Everyone wants to do their part to create a sustainable environment, as long as it doesn't cost too much. I am not going to get into the details of how and why a company goes green. Those topics are better left to experts like Lynn Jenkins and her publication Indiana Living Green. What I want to focus on is the topic of insuring against loss for the extra expense a company goes to when they actually go green. Let's start with a small… Continue

2008 Tax Tip

I was prepping my tax return for this year. I came across a line I had never seen before and wasn't expecting. It was an stimulus recovery credit. Apparrently if your stimulus payment was limited in 2008, you may be able to get more of it now. Reason being, the stimulus payment was based on your 2007 tax return, but was an estimate that is truly based on your 2008. So, in my case, my payment was limited due to a one time income recognition that put me over the limit. Since it was a one time eve… Continue

Seven Things About Kevin Hill (thanks Erik Dekcers!)

Erik Deckers memed me. He said he looked it up a couple months ago, I still haven't. I just figure it is a conglomerated word about my two favorite topics...me and me! 1. I could have gone to the University of Illinois on a full scholarship thanks to my grades. I was valedictorian of my high school class. (Ouch, I just hurt my arm patting myself on the back.) Instead I chose to play baseball at MariaContinue

Circle of Lights

Last year we went to the Circle of Lights on the Friday after Thanksgiving. While it was a fun event, the actual lighting is very anti-climactic because it lasts only a couple seconds. I don't really mind the crowd, but it does make it tough to keep track of four kids. And with all the activity, there is no access to the actual monument. This year, we went down on Saturday. Much less people and you have access to the whole monument. The kids could walk up to the base of the monument and look up… Continue

What to do on the only January Weekend without NFL Football

Indianapolis is a great city, but often we fail to take advantage of the great opportunities that are here. Never is that more true than January. It is cold, often snowy and slushy, and just not conducive to leaving the house. Add to that, intense NFL playoff football every weekend, both Saturday and Sunday. That is, until the week before the Superbowl. If you are like me, there is an invetibable letdown and sense of dismay over the inability to watch grown men beat the tar out of each other for… Continue

End of the World or Beginning of Time Travel

Scientists way smarter than anyone I have ever met will begin smashing protons into each other today underneath the Alps. The Large Hadron Collider is a tunnel in the shape of a ring, 17 miles around. Skeptics say that when the protons are smashed together it will create black holes that will end up consuming the earth. At the other end of the spectrum, some think it will allow for multiple worm holes to be opened up and a… Continue

Does no child left behind include any English?

I cannot believe the documents that are put out in public that pass as business communication. I just received an email from a large insurance agency with a subject line that read "This may effect you. March 19th our Voicemail System is being Upgraded" Last time I checked the correct word choice would have been the verb affect. We also have a regulatory agency in the state that regularly makes presentations regarding the status of their parrticular industry in this state. On one powerpoint sli… Continue
