1. In 1977, the sun, the moon, the stars and my parents' pocketbook aligned and I was on my way to spend a year in Israel. They gladly paid for my plane ticket (were they trying to get rid of me? hmmmm....) I spent a year in a program sponsored by the Israeli government which was based on Peace Corps. As I was preparing to matriculate from grad school #1 (see below), I mentioned to an instructor that I was applying to the Peace Corps to go to Madagascar (this was before the cartoon). He suggeste…

Is it just me or did McCain sound racist in his concession speech? It sure seemed to me that he over focused on Obama's race. What the h%^* does a candidate's race have to do with anything?

After watching the 3rd debate my choice for President has not changed. What about your choice?
BEFORE YOU ANSWER HERE'S THE RULE FOR PARTICIPATING IN THIS BLOG: DO NOT SAY, INDICATE OR OTHERWISE INTIMATE WHO YOU ARE VOTING FOR. What I am interested in is whether or not the debate actually changed opinions, strengthened already existing opinions or had no affect. Got it?

This evening I got a call from 999-999-9999/Out of Area (per my caller ID). I was skeptical but feeling feisty after a particularly grueling day at work so I answered. Too bad for the caller. It was a political poll taker and he immediately launched into his questions. Before I had a chance to think he asked my presidential choice - Obama or McCain? I told him (I won't tell you because it's not germane to my post). Then he asked about my gubernatorial choice - Daniels or Long-Thompson. But by th…

I had fun tonight at my 6th show of the Fringe season. The magicians I sat with had fun tonight. The other Fringe actors I sat with had fun tonight. Taylor Martin had fun tonight. And what makes this last comment
amazing magical is that after the revealing light at the beginning of the
last show (you'll have to read the blog on the last show) a trick went bad tonight but yet Andrea picked back up…

Lorraine and I spent about 12 hours at the Fringe Festival on Saturday which gave us plenty of time to see, hear, taste and experience the annual Mass Ave event. We saw 5 plays, 2 music acts, 1 street performer, 1 Indian dancer (or should I say, dancer from India),
Erik Deckers and many, many other friends. We ate at
Yats,…

After spending the entire day at the Fringe Festival,
the Birdmann would be our 5th and final play of the day. We began the day on a high note at
Assholes and Aureoles and ended it on the low note of the Birdmann. This was by far our least favorite of the day. The Birdmann, Trent Baumann from Surfers Paradise, Australia, flew over here to present his one…

For the past 8 years, I have been on the board of the Nora Northside Community Council. We are a civic organization on the north side of Indianapolis that provides monthly public forums to review land use, zoning and variance cases going before the Indianapolis zoning boards. This past week, the Zoning Board approved a variance to the billboard zoning regulations for a billboard located at the David Wolf bridge at 86th Street and the White River (near the Fashion Mall). This variance approval fl…

I admit that I am not the "greenest" person to
walk drive on this earth. But lately I have been giving some thought to what we/I am doing to harm our global home and what we/I can do to help. One way is to participate in Earth Hour 2008. For one hour Saturday night at 8:00 pm, people all over the world will be turning off all the lights in their homes, offices, buildings - wherever they are. The impact can be dramatic.
HOW DID IT START?
It started in 2007 with a question: how can…

For quite some time, I have toyed with the idea of running for public office. However, using the New York Rules of Public Office, since I have never had an affair, I find that I am not qualified to serve the public. I thought about taking applications from women who would want to help me become qualified. But because it would most likely "upset" my wife and because I don't have a spare $4300 sitting around I am hereby notifying the world, that I, Andrew Ball, will not accept a nomination to run…

Early in the life of Smaller Indiana, my wife, Lorraine, posted a blog titled "My Life in Six Words". She asked us to share our life stories in 6 words.
Since that time our community has grown by more than 800% and it is buried deep in the archives (who would have thought we'd have archives after 3 months...) For me personally I think so highly of the concept that I thought it would be fun to revisit it now that we have more than 1600 members. Here's the link:…
