The King of Madison Avenue

I finished “The King of Madison Avenue” by Kenneth Roman, a few months ago. The book is probably the most comprehensive (and accurate) biography of David Ogilvy ever written. I’ve been meaning to turn a couple of the choicest, dog-eared pages into blog posts for some time now. I still plan to do that, specifically around his views on the importance of good writing in the creative industry, but for the time being I thought I’d just pull a couple of quotes out of the book that I thought were espec… Continue

We Got Fired & You Can Too!

Recently we were informed by a client, with whom we had been working for several months, that they were moving their account to a design shop, located in a very large city on the east coast. It wasn’t ugly or contentious, there were no angry words, or overt slights – it was all quite civilized. But that didn’t temper the sting of rejection. This particular relationship was, by our standards, extremely short-lived. Of course, we’ve had client relationships die slow deaths of attrition. It’s a fun… Continue

The Role of Experience Design in Start-Ups

At Kristian Andersen + Associates we bill ourselves as a brand experience design consultancy. This is a pretty nebulous way of trying to package a handful of distinct, yet deeply connected, disciplines into one cogent, tightly-edited description of our services. As we continue to refine our offerings to clients and partners, we also continue to struggle with how best articulate those offerings. Ultimately, our mission is to help technology-focused start-ups (and growth-oriented companies) become… Continue

The Role of Trust in Building a Great Design Partnership

Have you ever been involved in a client engagement where you felt that you just couldn’t get through? Where mediocre work kept bubbling to the top and the most compelling ideas kept landing on the cutting room floor. Where in spite of you and your team’s best efforts, you just couldn’t seem to get the client to rally around and support your recommendations. We’ll you’re certainly not alone, since time immemorial practitioners in the creative services industry have struggled with spending more ti… Continue

Sacrificing Relationships for Sustenance

Burger King continues to position itself on the vanguard of fast food marketing. First there was the subversive chicken, then that creepy king thing, now they’ve rolled out Whopper Sacrifice. At the heart of the campaign is a Facebook application that offers a free whopper in exchange for “de-friending” 10 of your Facebook friends.

Taking a page from design firms

The Wall Street Journal ran an interesting article on Nov 10, 2008 about how businesses are tapping designers (and design thinking) to drive innovation. “When New York’s Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center wanted to make the chemotherapy process easier on patients three years ago, it sought help from an unusual place: the design firm IDEO Inc. The IDEO consultants approached the problem the way they design eggbeaters or CD players: by closely watching patients and testing little changes. T… Continue

The marriage of Interface, Product & Brand

The work we do at Kristian Andersen + Associates falls into two buckets that are typically considered to be fairly unrelated disciplines: Branding (Identity Development) & Experience Design (Product Development). Even inside a client organization there’s a pretty solid wall built between brand management (which is typically a function of marketing) and product design and development (which is typically a function of engineering). Of course there are exceptions to this rule and every organiza… Continue

The Shifting Role of Design in Business

Bruce Mau in the Massive Change Project boils design down to “The potential to plan and produce desired outcomes.” I don’t know about you, but that sounds a lot different than what my esteemed professors in design school told us. If one was inclined to go back far enough, you would find that the profession of design was on par with most other “craft professions”. Designers were educated and trained in much the same fashion as stone masons or printers. There were design guilds, journeymen, and a… Continue

A Design Culture Manifesto

As a result of the work we do in helping develop brand strategies and designing customer experiences, we are increasingly being asked to assist in the task of instilling a culture of design thinking into an organization. As we continue to build our own competencies in the areas of design management, it only makes sense that we should endeavor to share our own best practices and lessons learned with our clients. The task however, has consistently proven to be more difficult than it would appear t… Continue
