Owning a business and working for oneself seems to have a lot of perks, right? Why wouldn’t everyone want a flexible schedule, no boss, freedom to make their own decisions, etc?
It’s not as easy as it seems. A lot of people don’t make it through their first year of business with their start up company. Here are 10 common mistakes people make when starting their own business that lead to failure.
1.
Not doing your homework: Before getting into an industry make sure you know the in’s and o…

I rec'd an email the morning of Bigger Ideas from Mike Karnuta from the
Indiana Sports Corporation and it inspired me to write and tell this to the crowd at Bigger Ideas.
We are the misfits.
We are the rebels.
We are the troublemakers.
We are the round pegs in the square holes.
We are the ones who see things differently.
We're not fond of rules.
And we have no respect for the status quo.
You can quote us. Disagree with us.
Glorify, or vilify us.

I must admit... I was skeptical...
Smaller Indiana Bigger Idea exceeded my widest expectations!
Everything was done at a very high level.
Hard work of planning and execution was paid off - organizational part was seamless! Volunteers were exceptional!
The energy of the audience and the presenters blended just perfectly - Every one of them was an outstanding human being.
If I could change anything I would finish the event with a sparkling personality of fabulous
Ken Johnson and his gif…

Did you Know Jebediah Coyle, Pat Coyle's great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandfather put together something very similar to the Smaller Indiana Bigger Ideas Conference back in the 1760s?
That's right! It was called the "Smaller Colonies, Grandiose Ideas Perfunctionary." Now, Imagine if Benjamin Franklin, who discovered electricity and invented bifocals, had met Thomas Edision, who invented the light bulb? Society would have been "enlightened" much sooner and we may have even had…

Just read a brief post by Seth Godin, and as usual, he makes me think. This post entitled
Why Am I Here, challenges you to do more then just show up at a conference or a meeting.
Why are you attending, what do you hope to learn, who do you hope to meet? While good questions for any event, this is great advice for anyone attending Smaller Indiana, Bigger ideas, because this event is about participation and conversat…

My Dad always used to say, 'it's better for someone else to say good things about you than for you to talk about yourself." In that spirit, I want to share just a couple of thoughts about the amazing group of people / companies sponsoring
Smaller Indiana and the Bigger ideas Conference.
I've appreciated our sponsors from day one, but this week really exemplified just how important…

Every day I look, it seems like more and more people are signing up for this so-called "Bigger Ideas Conference."
Let me serve as a candle in the wind (I love that song, NON-PRINCES DI VERSION THANK YOU) standing up against this crazy confluence of creative curmudgeons.
Here are the Top 10 reasons why I am NOT - repeat NOT - one more time - NOT attending said conference.
10. I think INSIDE not OUTSIDE the box - especially if there's a nice corn beef on rye and baked lays in there.
9. I can in…

Let’s talk a little bit about inspiration, innovative minds, intentions of accomplishment, and Indiana. Every day I am here, every person I meet, every life I can contribute to, I am amazed by what Indianapolis has given me. The people I have met and friends I have made through Smaller Indiana and
Rainmakers, have exceeded any expectation I may have had. To me, THAT is exciting.
I am from a fairly small town and as a child growing into a teenager I knew…

A new acquaintance of mine - Lindsy Manfredi introduced me to Smaller Indiana today. What a great site. We've been using LinkedIn etc. for a long time, but this is different. This is about and for Indiana professionals. Hats off to the creators of this site.
I plan on being very involved with Smaller Indiana - I can't wait.

Just a note to everyone to let you know that I had to make modifications to the design of Smaller Indiana last night. Our platform rolled out some new elements that weren't styled well and when I attempted to make some edits, it rolled out an entirely new style sheet that pretty much broke our old one.
Rather than troubleshoot the new styling all night, I opted to take a theme that was designed for the new elements and roll that out instead.
There are some things I like about the new layout -…

First, I'd like to thank Lorraine and Kristen for accommodating my schedule and having the party on a Thursday vs the usual Tuesday. I appreciate it, and I was very happy that I was able to make it. The last party that I was able to make was the 2k. A lot has happened since then!
When I got home, I was trying to remember all of the Tweeple that I met and Tweeted my excitement about
finally meeting them. With 140 characters, I just could not fit all of them in the post... :)
So, I hope t…

Hello Smoosiers,
I have received many requests to start a blog with current interpreted data for our Indiana real estate market. There are innumerable real estate dimensions in Indiana.
First, it is vital to market with 21st century marketing tools. So, as an early proponent of digital media back to the 1980's, I thought I would share some 21st century marketing strategies that work. Here is a new article just posted this morning, "Get It Sold! Marketing Your Home To Sell In Today's Market". (…

The Smaller Indiana Bigger Ideas Conference idea sounds excellent!
I have already submitted one Speaker Nomination (Daniel Ott http://www.theedgeam.com) and may submit more.
And if the E in TED means ENTERTAINMENT, then how about selecting Smaller Indiana Member Daniel Andrew Young to provide some?

So often we tend to look at what's wrong, sad, bad or depressing in our lives. Instead, if we look at what's right, happy, good, uplifting, joyous, fulfilling, energizing and motivating we would make it a better world just because of our positive energy. (And did you notice I have many more 'good' words than 'bad'?)
So, I am using this final post of 2008 to share the things for which I am most grateful:
1.
Mike is, of course, number 1. He is my best friend, husband of many years, busine…

I wanted to invite everyone on
Smaller Indiana to come over to
www.indy.com to see v2.0 (a public Beta) which allows for the registered user to decide which widgets they want on their Home Page and those they want the world to see when viewing their Profile Page. Things are still a little buggy but your feedback will help improve life once the site goes full force in January.
Q&A #1: Yes, you can import and create any widget you like so long as the website you like has…

While downtown today, I ran into Brian Bosma. Mr. Bosma is the
Republican leader of the House of Representatives. It was a really nice conversation. I invited him to Smaller Indiana and that lead into a small chat of the impact that social media is having on this election.
Mr. Bosma left no doubt that he recognized the impact that social media has had on this election year. It was quite a refreshing conversation! I hope that Brian can join us on Smaller…
