Keeping a client year after year requires attaining customer loyalty which involves fitting together several pieces of a relationship puzzle. There is a science to understanding client loyalty. This includes recognizing the value of loyal clients, and creating and maintaining those loyal clients.
Research surveys have held the position that customers who were satisfied were more likely to remain…

You place the item in the bag, give your customer their change, smile and say thank you. Or you receive your purchase through your grocery cart on your web page. You click on the item processed button and click to close the screen. Either way, the sale is complete. Done. Finished. Over.
Too many people think of a sale this way. In today’s competitive market, this is the biggest mistake a business owner or sales professional can make. Once that customer walks out the door, you have a choice. To…

Offline social networks are affected by race and socio-economic status. Why would social media networks be any different than "real world" networks? (Need a better descriptor than "real world")
"I have friends who are white," says 19-year-old Diego Luna. "They are my white people friends and they are mostly on Facebook. That's why I use Facebook. My brown people are on MySpace." Diego Luna,19, in an NPR interview.

It’s easy to keep a relationship going with customers when you have a product or service that creates repeat purchases. But what about when your business is mostly a one-time sale per customer? There are two questions to answer: Why continue that relationship, and how?
Why you should keep that relationship going is, in one word, referrals. If you gave your customer a great experience, they will refer family, friends, neighbors and even people they don’t know (have you listened to grocery-store…

When you own or manage a business that provides repeat business opportunities, it’s important to stay in touch with your customers. It’s not a difficult thing to do, but often something small business owners and managers don’t think about – or feel they don’t have time for.
There are many quick, easy ways to stay top of mind. Just “being there when they need something” isn’t enough. Why? Because there are many other companies up and down the street who offer the same product or service – and th…

Isn't it true so often that as we get older, we realize how right our parents were in many situations? For example, I remember sitting down at the kitchen table after each birthday and Christmas and writing thank you cards to everyone who gave me a gift - something my mom would make me do every time. I often thought “how lame” because, in many cases, I already thanked them when I opened the gift.
Fast forward to now, and I see how smart she was! And she didn’t own a business. When I receive a t…

What blogging is: HARD. It takes time, creativity and often research to create a good blog. But it can also be rewarding when done right. It can introduce you to an audience you would not otherwise meet. That can bring you new prospects which could and probably will turn into customers.
What blogging is not: EASY. You need to establish a commitment to it. Blogging once in a while will show you don’t value it, so your readers won’t value it either. Your information must be pertinent, current, he…

View the plethora of blogs today, and you’ll find there are plenty of each. There is no hard-and-fast rule for blogging. Many people blog for themselves rather than for others – often these are in a format similar to a journal. Others share a journey of recovering from an illness, losing weight or coming out of a hurtful time in their lives. Many of these blogs serve as a healing process or as motivation for the writer. But they also provide great inspiration for others.
Business blogs are exac…

I often hear that small business owners fear the world of social media. They don’t know how or why. They don’t know what to say, when to say it, or to whom. They know they should use social media, but just fear the unknown.
Don’t be afraid – people on social media are, as a whole, friendly and supportive. Sign up for one or two sites at first. It’s like dipping your toes in the water to test the temperature. Search for specific people you want to follow, so your time is spent wisely. Make the c…

R&B singer Chris Brown spoke to Larry King this week about his alleged beating of his former girlfriend, Rihanna, and the court’s decision in the case. The quote that jumped out at me when reading about it on CNN is, “No one taught us how to love.” With his “very shocked” mother by his side, Brown said he was sentenced to five years probation and six months of community labor.
The regretful Brown says he is still in love with Rihanna, and when pressed by King to explain the violent altercat…

You know, I’ve never understood those folks who constantly draw a line between work life and personal life. I am not referring to bringing a crappy day home with you and taking it out on your family…which by the way, happens quite often and is really NOT cool. What I AM referring to is your relationship to your…

Ok, this started out as a blog, but I have a feeling it may turn into a rant…Okay, why did you make so many friends in college, at the local pool, in your fraternity, or in your club of choice?
People! There were a lot of people there. You didn’t have an agenda then… just shared experiences. You started socializing, then BAM you had friends. Sure you did…you are a cool enough person. I know this may be obvious to you. BUT IS IT? You get plugged into something new like a club or an event. You wa…

I met up with my buddy,
Dr. Charles Shinaver, last week. Our conversation didn't start on the path that it ended up on (does it ever?), but did indeed shift to the state of the economy and small business owners. However, as depressing as it was listening to him share with me the lastest 'gossip' on the economy (I call it gossip because I believe there is some control if we choose to take it), we both had similar conclusions in t…

One of the most important steps (if not the most important one) you can take when starting a business is to talk with your partner/spouse before you embark on your adventure. It’s absolutely crucial to have your partner with you on the same page when you start a business. Without thei…

From Old Testament times and ancient Greece and Rome to the present day, the olive branch has symbolized peace and gestures of reconciliation and goodwill.
Regardless of how the olive branch got its meaning, peace and goodwill are in short supply, whether we are considering the world as a whole or our individual relationships.
Relationships are too important to lose due to conflict. The Olive Branch is where people find peace in relationships.
All of us are involved in conflict at one time or…

There was so much conversation at the recent luncheon for BRN about the process for building relationship, I thought I would share a chapter in my book “The Power is in the Connection” co-authored with Jane Surges.
I hope you enjoy it.
Making the Choice
The process of choosing and deepening relationships is interrelated. At each point in your relationship, you and those to whom you relate may choose either to develop or not to develop your relationships further. How do we make that choi…

Everyone tends to discuss the concept of customer service as a way of building business and making a difference, but yet it's so hard to find in the real world of doing business.
When you get a moment, take a peek at the customer service movie below -

I challenge my fellow networkers to take on such a role in our community.

Remember the days when getting a New Year’s Eve Kiss was the highlight of the evening? About 10:00 you started checking out the crowd to see who you’d like to do a little…or big, lip lock with, when the clock struck midnight.
When you’re young and single, the pressure to embrace someone on New Year’s Eve is insurmountable. That midnight lip-lock is as synonymous with the holiday as noisemakers and Dick Clark. Everyone, it seems, wants to know if — and who — you plan on going after that night.…

I love to people watch! Airports are a great place to people watch and so are singles events.
For those of you who don't know what Plenty of Fish is....allow me to explain. Plenty of Fish is a free dating web site that has a local get together about once a month, so all the people on the web site can get together and socialize in person. Everyone with POF has a name tag, prizes are sometimes given away and generally it's a pretty good time. They usually take place in a bar, Bently's, Clancy's,…
