Motivational speakers often comment on the importance of your “why” and understanding exactly what your “why” is for doing the things you do. Until very recently, I think I’ve had lots of trouble actually enacting this kind of vision into everyday life in a way that is meaningful to my activities.
This post is a little more personal than things I usually write, so if you’re not at all interested in learning more about what makes me tick, you might go back to Hulu and be happier for it.

... @&$#*!
I'd knocked the trash can over -- again! And now I feared I would be late for work, but I couldn't just leave that mess in the alley. I have a tendency to really whip my car around quick, backing out of the driveway. Trash pick-up is only once a week, not frequent enough to quickly cement a routine. And for some reason my landlord ALWAYS puts those big cans right in my path. So, for a little wh…

Getting and staying in shape has everything to do with what goes on inside your head. There are many effective approaches to fitness, but none of them will work if you don't have the right mind set. These 8 tips will lead you to fitness success.
Make fitness a priority
This is the first decision that must be made. Care enough for yourself and your loved ones to make your health and fitness a priority.
Set Goals
Take both a long range and short range view of diet and exercise. F…

"Mom was never like this before….”
I was talking to a woman the other day whose mother has Alzheimer’s. Her mom has begun to walk up to men that live in the same Alzheimer’s center as she does and kiss them on the mouth. She becomes combative during showers and uses curse words. The daughter began to cry and said, “Mom was never like this before…..” Her words trailed off and her tears became harder.
Watching mom or dad acting in different ways can be very hard. Care givers often feel the need…

I love a spicy debate over new technology or social trends, and these days it’s impossible to mention Twitter or Facebook without triggering a verbal throw-down.
Once as separate as church and state, technology and social engagement are now inextricably bound together. The whole notion scares the bejeebees out of people. Thanks to the near-mainstreaming of Twitter, Facebook and other community platforms, it’s a cinch to elicit a stream of grunts and eye-rolling from your spouse, colleagues and…

Hours of cardio and calorie deprivation are not the way to look your best. Resistance training is the key to adding muscle and improving tone.
This is what I said when

I'm working with an amazing team for
Shanna's Story. When we
began our journey to tell the story and raise funds for Josiah Nelson and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, we didn't really know each other well. Now just a couple weeks shy of the campaign completion, we have grown together. Our biggest area of growth is our group…

If you've been following my blogs or e-zines, you know that I write many of my articles because of comments I've heard from my clients and subscribers. This one is no different. One thing I've been hearing a lot of lately is, "I want to start a business, but I just can't afford it right now," and "I want to invest in learning how to start a business, but I don't have the money to put into it." This is a legitimate, honest concern, and I want to talk to you about it. Because I get it.
I've been…

Several times a year, particularly at each New Year, I think it’s helpful to reevaluate where you’ve been recently and where you are going in your life. A few different people recently provided me with tidbits of wisdom about their chosen paths and how to achieve their goals, and together they provided an “aha” moment.
Read a brief description of some interesting analogies I learned to visualize your true path and overcome your obstacles at
Life Gems.…

It was late summer of 1976 and my girlfriend of two years had just broken off our relationship. We had been together for a couple of years and had talked about marriage after college. I did not realize that her influential parents had different ideas for their daughter, a beautiful strawberry blond with more freckles than I could count.
I was heart-broken and felt very alone. I knew that I would not find peace about this breakup until I felt fully connected with God.
Growing up in an o…

Taking Inspired Action – Finding Your Talents
I love Taking Inspired Action. It happens whenever I listen to the promptings that would engage my talents. You get them too. You just may be ignoring them because you don’t trust where they are coming from.
When something pops into our heads “out of thin air” we tend to think less of the idea than if someone we respect gives it to us. It’s very important to “hang out” with people who have enjoyed success; those who we want to model. And yes, when…

I was driving home last night from work and talking to someone on the phone. This person asked me why I would blog, made some comments about not understanding, then said it was kind of stupid. After I hung up, I began to think about personal growth and openmindedness.
How often are companies not growing because the leaders in the company are not growing? One of the things I love about business is that for the most part, the success is truly in our own hands. I am a firm believer that if one can…

This book is transforming my Life - I heard so much about it from my New Age friends that I thought I'd see what it's all about before spending money and went to the local library to try and get a copy - it was out of the English version but they have a Spanish one so I borrowed it. So with my dictionario I got through it! It's an easy read. Now I have to go and get the English version for sure! Talking about seeing the light! Past things/situations make (more) sense now. However, practicing and…

There are just some conversations that even the most experienced mother cannot anticipate. Charlie brought one to me last night.
Charlie: "Mom, do you wear underwear all the time?"
Wanna know where this is heading? Ordinarily, I only cross-post from my personal blog to SI if I feel the post is fairly directly relevant to other Smoosiers. But I'm feeling a bit saucy tonight, so click

A little bit about myself, I’m from the big company mindset. I’m finding inter-departmental “synergies”. I’m “aligning” marketing with sales. I’m “optimizing” business processes. I’m “segmenting” our customers. Last one…I have an “employee number” assigned to me. You get the picture.
After several years with the big company environment you become immune to the fact that you are just like any other employee at the company. You are nothing special. The phrase, “its business, not personal” is dril…

It was estimated that by this year there would be over 2 billion cell phone users world wide.
At one point or another we have all read or overheard suggestions for proper etiquette when using our beloved cell phones in public. Although on an almost daily basis I encounter people who seem to have left their manners at home. Example; I was at the bank the other day and watched as the poor teller had to try to get a word in edgewise with the guy standing in front of her as he carried on a casual c…

This story is for you,
Manash, for calling my 80's addiction out. The story basically goes:
Every year a coworker wishes me a "Happy 29th" on my birthday. Every year I roll my eyes and tell my real age. Hey, I'm no dummy. To me, it just confirms that I am not and do not look 29, and will not fool a soul. One year he says this again and adds that I should tell people I'm 29. I told him:
"When I tell people I'm 29, people will say '…
