Last night at the Rainmakers Main Event, Lorraine Ball of Roundpeg spoke about our local economic eco-system. She asked each of us to list three businesses we would miss if they were to close up, and it really started making me think what part I can play to make sure this doesn’t happen to the three I listed. First thing I can do is to make sure everyone within my circle or “tribe” knew how much I appreciated my three – and even though I thin… Continue

When midterms came out the Head Varsity Baseball Coach emailed me about my son’s grades a few days later. (This coach is great, he really keeps tabs on his boys and helps ensure that they are a positive reflection of the team, the school and the community.) When I told Jake about th… Continue

Whenever I give a presentation to a group of people, I open it up for questions at the end. This usually leads to some interesting questions. It also tells me what topics people are interested in that I might want to cover in future presentations.
One question that always comes up is the one about social networking, or social media. It usually comes in one of the following flavors:
"What is this Twitter thing?"
"My daughter told me to get on Facebook. It seems like a big wast
I've been asked many times recently what the difference is between a Facebook fan page and a Facebook group. It's a great question and the two are similar enough that it can sometimes be confusing.
Here's my short answer: if you have a logo and a legal entity, you probably want a fan page. Otherwise, you probably want a group.
Fan pages are more appropriate for businesses, non-profits, organizations, or any entity that has a legal presence and a brand. For example, SpinWeb has a… Continue

Invest in you: tips for getting the most out of your conference attendance
Blog Indiana isn’t over for me. Sponsored by the School of Informatics at IUPUI and other corporate sponsors, this three-day conference on blogging and social media ended yesterday. It jangled my nerves. It reconnected me with someone I hadn’t seen in almost a decade. It freed me of some self-limiting beliefs that have dogged me for years. And it introduced me to… Continue

Let’s say you’re an entrepreneur. You have this great idea for a small medical device. It’s filling a specific niche, and it’s innovative and efficient.
Great. But how to get it from your mind to the minions?
The good news in – you’re not in this alone. There are people – companies – out there who can come along side to mentor you and help bring your brain child to life (and more importantly, to market).
INpact is a consortium of such individuals and companies. INpact resources help you navig… Continue
How is your 60 second introduction? Are you using words and phrases that will connect you with the people you are meeting with everyday?
For example if you are an IT professional, what are you saying that will help the people you are networking with and meeting with understand exactly who you are and what you do?
Does your introduction sound like this?
“Hello, my name is David, and I work for XYZ IT Solutions, and I am a developer.”
That introduction is not very memorable, is it? Why don’t yo… Continue

Dancing with the Stars is a very very popular program. The dancers spend a great deal of time training their dance partners. When one goes left the other goes right, there are dips and turns, stops and starts and all of it with the rhythm of the music in the background.
How does all of this relate to referrals, it is the same strategy. If you are going to get valuable referrals from your referral partners it requires that you train them and train them correctly.
Back to the dancers, one is the… Continue
This week, I had a realization that I would like to share with small business owners or freelancers who are just starting out on their own. It is this: just because you are new to your business, in a start up mode, or are small doesn't mean that your skills and business are less valuable than what anyone else can provide. Sure, it might mean that you have less experience, but you still bring value to the table. Don't feel like you have to apologize for being new or small. Have confidence in what… Continue
Over the years I have developed a pretty deep network and one of the things that I spend a lot of time doing is up dating my database. In the process of doing that this week I noticed that my strongest referral relationships are with guys. So I began to think about that, why are there more males in my strong contact network instead of women and here are some of the things that I came up with.
When I sit down with a guy to build a referral relationship the conversation tends to be straight forwa… Continue
Networking has become a very popular way to find business opportunities through relationships and expanding one's contact sphere. For some, networking has also become a pastime and the line between work and play has become blurred. That made me wonder, is it possible to network too much? How much networking should we do? What are we trying to accomplish?
Here's some thoughts on Too Much N… Continue
In general, I am new to the whole blog thing. I did my first business oriented posts for the first time last week. If you are curious about consumer marketing, you can check out my blog at ALLinOneMarketing.wordpress.com. But I would also like to post some general "good advice" that I have received in this blog on smaller indiana. I am starting up my own small business like I believe many others are on the site, and so I am happy to share the… Continue
Ok. I have resisted and resisted..but its futile. The interface of technology and communication keeps knocking me on the forehead (or back of the head) and as much as I feel like a baby taking its first steps, awkward and unsteady, but curious and energized by what I am about to discover through this ‘blogging’ thing, I know that I must not resist anymore, and have to take the plunge to join the millions of others who have something valuable to say (or not so valuable-depending on your own view… Continue
