People complain about spam all of the time. But not me. Between Gmail and Google Apps I get very little spam. And the spam that I do get is nicely tucked away in a special spam folder that I need only check about once per week.
But guess what showed up on my mobile phone today?

I've always hated punch cards. You know, the kind you get at a restaurant, bakery or oil change place that reward you for every X number of purchases?
It's not that I don't like getting something for free as a reward for doing business with someone. It's that I can never remember to take the punch card with me when I visit the establishment. That, and I really don't like carrying them in my wallet (for more on this watch this video).
Which means I have about 3 or 4 punch cards for each place b… Continue

I admit it. Today, I was on a roll catching up on email when I realized I had to go to the bathroom. It actually bugged me because it was the kind of bathroom trip that takes more than a few minutes if you catch my drift.
And that's when I did it. I grabbed my iPhone and took it with me to the bathroom. Mind you I work out of my house so I still had my privacy despite the fact that I probably lost my dignity.
So there I was. Doing my business while "doing my business".
I was so proud of my ti… Continue

Last night, my wife and I attended the Billy Joel, Elton John Face 2 Face concert. It's no surprise that, since our kids were born, we haven't been to a lot of concerts so I found it fascinating to people-watch throughout the concert.
Even more fascinating was the tremendous use (and mis-use) of technology during the concert. I wish I could have talked to the people I observed but it was a little too crowded for that. But here's what I would have said:
My dad recently asked me to settle an argument between him and my mom. My mom said she heard on the news that "it is now possible, when your cell phone is in the on position, to listen in from anywhere. This includes 'sitting in' on board meetings and stealing company secrets if one of the participants has his or her cell phone on the table in the on position." My dad, on the other hand, doesn't buy a bit of this.
When my dad first emailed this to me, I laughed at how preposterous this sounded.… Continue

Techies have been throwing around the term smart phone for a while now. The term is used to describe cell phones with enhanced features such as web browsing, email and video. Think iPhone, BlackBerry or Treo.
As "smart" as these phones are, I never thought they would compete with… Continue

As a pastor I am constantly reviewing my time. How I am investing it is critical to the life, health, and growth of our church. If I invest it wisely, people will be led well and I position us to experience whatever God wants to do. If I invest it poorly, we will loose focus and neglect the opportunities God has for us. As a result I'm constantly reviewing the use of my time and if I am be… Continue

Quick, tell me how many minutes you used on your cell phone last month? If you don't know the answer maybe it's time to look a little closer at your next statement. Better yet, go back a few statements and figure out your average monthly usage. You might be overpaying for your minutes.
I just did this little exercise and found out that I used an average of 500 minutes per month over the past three months. My plan entitles me to 1,400 minute per month so I found this a bit troubling.
After logg… Continue

TiVo has released a lot of new features over the past few weeks. First it was the ability to order Domino's pizza. Then it was Netflix video on demand. And now it's TiVo mobile for your cell phone. While I haven't had the chance to fully test drive TiVo Mobile, I have put the Domino's pizza ordering and Netflix video on demand through the ringer.
While I'd love to tell you that I breezed through the pizza ordering and video streaming, that isn't the case. One was a royal pain in the neck and th… Continue

I've been blogging for a long time now but there is still something in the blogosphere I have never attempted. Blogging at 70 miles per hour.
No, I wasn't driving. I'm not that crazy! But I was a passenger in a car traveling down the Interstate on my way home from Thanksgiving vacation.
My original plan was to write yesterday's blog post about buying new release DVDs at Blockbuster when I got home last night. Lucky for me I had the technology on-hand to do it earlier because my trip home ended… Continue

I have whole-heartedly adopted text messaging. I clearly see the benefits of using text messaging and many times find myself choosing to send a text message over an email. I even love picking and choosing what types of alerts I want to receive on my mobile phone via text message.
For example, I have my mobile phone integrated with my Google calendar such that I get a text message reminder before each of my appointments. This is especially helpful when I am out and about, away from my computer.… Continue

This morning I woke up at 6:15 am, anxious to cast my vote for the next President of the United States. Unlucky for me however, I had to wait another two and a half hours before I could actually vote.
No, the voting line wasn't two and a half hours long. It was more that I had to get my kids out of bed and ready for school and couldn't vote until my kids were safely on the bus. Then I had a short drive to my voting site and about a 30 minute wait until it was my turn to vote.
Obviously, being… Continue

I was 9 years old the Summer of 1975 and my home town was serviced by the Shelby County Library Book Mobile. It faithfully arrived every two weeks. As I readied for it's arrival that afternoon, the morning began simply enough. I rode my bike over to my friend Michelle's house, she lived just behind the State Bank of Waldron, where the Book-Mobile parked.
I'd just been hooked by "Space Shows" on TV. In prime time, Kolchak, the Night Stalker began, though I watched it through interlocked fingers.… Continue
Four weeks ago my watch battery died at about the same time the watch band broke in half. I figured it was time to get a new watch. But not being able to turn down a techie challenge I decided instead to try a little experiment. I wanted to see how long I could go without a watch.
The reason I wanted to try this is because in Noobie's cell phone class, I tell the participants that cell phones have actually obsoleted certain consumer products for some people. One such product is
