Megan Zurawicz They Call Me Mister Fry

I knew this was going to be good from the short preview I saw, and I was recommending folks see the show based on that. Now I've seen the show in its entirety. Wow. I expected to be amused; I expected to be educated; I expected to be made to think. I expected to hear anecdotes of teacher experiences, stories of students, tales of the culture shock of a kid from Indianapolis private schools finding himself as a teacher in notoriously tough South Central Los Angeles, and the insights that came t… Continue

Taylor Martin My Busy Month

For me, October is the busiest month of the year. I have 2 Indy Magic Monthly shows at Theatre On The Square, Mississinewa 1812 this weekend, River Thru History in Willowsprings, Illinois the following weekend, The Grand Masquerade for Damien Center on Oct. 24, and a show for Gleener's employees. I do wish all my months were this busy. Being an entertainer without an agent and fending for myself on the time I have alloted to chasing after shows, is not easy. Learning new illusions, keeping up w… Continue

Bill Skaggs I've almost BLANKED myself like ten times!

As the current director of INDYPROV, I've been very involved with this year's IndyFringe Festival. From rehearsals, to shows, to street teaming, I've seen every side of the festival. I have to say that I love this time a year. It allows us to connect with other performance… Continue

Dick Davis Mr. Charles, Currently of Palm Beach- Comments

Mr. Charles, Currently of Palm Beach. When the synopsis says that Mr. Charles was asked to leave New York City because he was “too gay” I was expecting the worst. Before the play started, I tweeted some friends that I expected it to be “raunchy.” As we were let in, Somewhere Over the Rainbow was playing on the sound system, it was soon followed by Liza Minelli's New York, New York at least I suspected it, Shazaam confirmed it. How stereotypical is this going to be? If there was a single stereot… Continue

Dick Davis The Tragical Ballad of Black Bonnet- Comments

The Tragical Ballad of Black Bonnet The synopsis of this operetta led me to believe that this was going to be some kind of GLBT propaganda piece. Since that had been my initial perspective on the Festival there was no reason to think otherwise. A transgender person, living as a woman, falls in love with the lovely daughter of the landlord. Yeah, right, I'm ready for the crap. Surprise! This production was thoroughly delightful in its staging and delivery. The musical background music was way t… Continue

Dick Davis 7 (x1) Samurai- Comments

7 (x1) Samurai The subtitle of the play was, “An epic tale. . .told by an idiot” May I assure you that David Gaines, if he is an idiot, has covered his tracks very well. His solo portrayal of all the characters in this classic tale was superb. My notes stated “Marcel Marceau meets Robin Williams” and while primarily mime, his use of many sound effects and few words enhanced the performance. His expressions and physical stunts kept the pace at an almost unachievable level for the entire show. T… Continue

Dick Davis Another Classic of American Literature- Comments

Another Classic of American Literature All of our party had somehow thought this show had a Western theme. It was readily apparent that it was not. Taking place in the seventy-fifth floor office of the CEO, it began with hopes of being a satirical slam on American capitalism. While there were tones and ironies which continued in this theme, it quickly fell apart just as it was beginning build. Certainly there were funny lines, my favorite was “I've eaten chili smarter than you.” The dialog bet… Continue

Erik Deckers Groundwork Suites is Outstanding Performance by Kenyettá Dance Company

My 8-year-old daughter and I almost didn't go to the Groundwork Suites by the Kenyettá Dance Company. We originally wanted to go to Blunder Construction, but they were sold out. We stood on the sidewalk in front of TOTS, and I wavered. Do we leave, do we do something else? I borrowed someone else's program, saw that Groundwork Suites was playing in 8 minutes. My daughter is from Haiti, and we have taught her to be proud of being black. She also loves to move, and has taught herself some basic g… Continue

Erin Greer IndyFringe Review: Gone, Gone, Gone

Gone, Gone, Gone is a love story told through movement and masking tape, with a strong supporting role played by paper towels. The performance is mostly engaging and fun, except in a few tiresome interludes involving arranging the tape and paper towels; I haven’t made out whether these adhesives and sanitizers are meant to be metaphoric, or are playful exhortations to see the magic in the everyday (or signs implying… Continue

Mason King Fringe Blogging: "Thurgoode"

• Wednesday, Aug. 26, 9 p.m. — "Thurgoode," TOTS Something unexpected happened to me in the last third of Heather Storms’ autobiographical, split-personality drama “Thurgoode.” I paused the running autopsy in my head — “amateurish, nonsensical, poorly staged, and just a big mess” — and started to enjoy the production on its own terms. I started to like the characters. I started to like the actors. The writing seemed to get sharper. The show earns some moments of deeply felt emotion, and I had t… Continue

Faith Wesstrom Fringe blog on True Identity

While waiting for the doors to the show to open, I read the flyer given to me – True Identity is presented by Firefall Dance Theatre and the creator and choreographer of this performance is Stephanie Riner. The dancers in this performance included Magdalena Olesiak, Julia Richards, Jennifer Shoreman, Lydia Wathen, Cami Zook, Jenny Braun, Terri Cupp and Andrea Eberhart. As we filed into the hall, we got stamped on our hand with a bar code that had the word “Priceless” at the bottom of it. The sh… Continue

I have now seen and blogged about 21 shows in the 2009 Indy Fringe Festival. I tell you, this is the life! I took off most of this week from my day job so that I could have a good, Fringey wallow. My most recent "review bundle post" is here. In it, I share some thoughts about the following shows: (Tuesday) The Cask of Amontillado humanature The Tragical Ballad of Black Bonnet (Wednesday) mur… Continue

Taylor Martin Indy Fringe, Chapter oh...

I can't believe we're down to just 2 more shows. They have been going so well. And the shows I've seen are all great and deserve the audiences they are getting. New Vaudeville is wonderful. I've worked with 80% of the cast before. Elliot Feltman is doing his best work. It feels like a bur lee cue should feel. It's fabulous just for Joey's guitar styling, and there is so much more. A real 10 in one feel. Here at Indy Fringe we have a tradition. All the performers go to the worst reviewed show i… Continue

Erik Deckers Waiting With M. Godot - A Review of Love, Wine, and Redheads

I don't even remember what the show description was about. All I saw was the word "redhead," and I knew I wanted to see Waiting With M. Godot. "Blah blah blah redhead blah blah blah." I have a soft spot in my heart for redheads. It's the Scots-ophile in me. So I went to M. Godot on Tuesday night to see what the big deal was, and if there was anything other than the promise of a redhead. Loved it! As a writer who primarily spends my day on the right hemisphere of my cranium, I… Continue

Mason King Fringe Blogging: "Sex, Dreams and Self-Control, Part II"

If you have already seen Part I of “Sex, Dreams and Self-Control,” you probably have already made up your mind about seeing Part II. Either way, don’t let me dissuade you. If you enjoyed the first half of Kevin Thornton’s coming-out-and-coming-of-age-and-just-plain-coming monologue, you’ll enjoy the sense of closure that comes with Part II. If you thought Part I was just plain “meh,” or reprehensible for any number of button-pushing reasons, Part II isn’t going to change your mind. I will say t… Continue

Rebecca Holloway Fringey Weekend Part two

Sunday started with Competitive Picnicking at the outdoor tent. The whole family came out and enjoyed a yummy picnic lunch. Indyhooper’s join in and we all had a wonderful time juggling and hooping together. My husband took our toddler home and my 14yr old son, 5yr old daughter and I were off to catch a show before Busking. My son ran off to the Phoenix Theater to see the Hefner Monologues and my daughter and I went… Continue

Erin Greer IndyFringe Review: Phil the Void - SEE IT!

Do well by yourself and get an advanced ticket to see one of the final shows of Phil The Void: The Great Brain Robbery. Phil Van Hest’s standup comic/philosophic/political act will kickstart your brain, make you laugh, make you flush in embarrassed self-recognition, and make you share some of his palpable anger and disappointment with the unsatisfactory status quo of our common political and in… Continue

Hope Baugh Fringe Shows - Part One

I have been seeing and writing about a lot, too, but I love being able to read lots of opinions and experiences. I have also enjoyed meeting some SI people for the first time in person during the festival. (Hi, Lorraine and Andrew Ball!) Here is a link to a long… Continue
