Daniel Herndon Indianapolis Pet Supplies "Plus" Owner Gets Thrown in a Cage to Save Pets and Push Adoption, Spay/Neuter Goal

Nick Milano said he insists on making a difference, so here is what we are doing to make the difference. Pet Supplies "Plus" of Indianapolis will be caging their owner at the Great Indy Pet Expo until the goal of 250 adoptions/spay/neuters is met. On Friday Nov. 13, Nick Milano will be placed in a Great Dane cage to raise awareness for the need to adopt animals from shelters and to ensure all Indiana pets are spayed or neutered. During this time, Indianapolis Animal Care and Control (IACC) will… Continue

Shannon Gross Six Simple Ways to Reduce Fourth-of-July-Fireworks Anxiety for Your Animal Friends

I’ve been living in the same house for a decade now, and I love it. The back yard slopes down into a pond (okay, an architect friend of mine calls it a water feature but to me it is now and always will be a pond); we are blessed with a plethora of wild critters who live in and ramble through our neighborhood; and the neighbors are nice and quiet. Well, most of the neighbors. A few years ago, Mr. Firecracker bought the house two doors down and fireworks that were once blessedly far away were now… Continue

Shannon Gross Wondering How to Donate to Your Favorite Animal-Related Charities? Six Simple Questions Help Focus Your Giving

I was ready to wrap up this newsletter (really ready) when I had a funny feeling that I should write just one more article. I tried to wiggle out of it (shorter newsletters are better, right?) but the feeling just wouldn’t let me go. So, I don’t know who this article is for but it might be for you; so, read on! I don’t know about you, but sometimes I get so locked into one way of doing something that I mi… Continue

Connie Swaim Do you love animals? Be a Volunteer or Foster

I volunteer at both the Humane Society of Indianapolis and Indianapolis Animal Care and Control. I have also done fostering for a couple of other animal shelters. This has been one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. I now wish I could win the lottery so I could just volunteer full time. Both shelters are extremely accommodating about what you can do. You can spend as much or as little time as your life allows and there are all kinds of jobs available. You can walk dogs, play with t… Continue

Taylor Martin A Schnauzer, A Mother Basset and her brood! A Valentine's Day Story

Midnight is our 11 month old miniature schnauzer. You can see his photo on my photo page. The photo was when he was 8 months old and was right before the really nasty winter weather set in. So, we haven't had him groomed for 3 months. He's a bit rambunctious right now, so we had hesitation in getting him into the groomers at Petsmart. They do a good job, even if there's a few hidden charges that show up, but that's something we have to be aware of next time. So, Feb. 14th, Valentine's Day, was… Continue

Tristan Schmid Who's leading animal welfare worldwide?

I’m not an eternal optimist. But my faith in the power of hope and courage is stronger than ever, thanks to leaders like Rob Stewart (shark advocate and creator of the film Sharkwater), Paul Watson (founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society), Jill Robinson (founder of Animals Asia Foundation), and Seth Godin (social-media guru and inspiration to leaders/heretics worldwide.)… Continue

Shawn Quick-Raflik Rescued Dogs Get New Forever Home

A fews months ago, my husband and I found two dogs running around our neighborhood. One of our neighbors told us that they had been loose in the area for several days. After much coaxing, we finally where able to trap them in our garage. They were both beautiful and you could tell they were best friends. I posted photos and a story about them here on SI and on Craigslist. Several people told me about the Northern Lights Sled Dog Rescue, Inc. and even passed my story on to the rescue. They contac… Continue
