According to Wikipedia, a
bellwether is any entity in a given arena that serves to create or influence trends or to presage future happenings. In the United States, Missouri is often referred to as a bellwether because it has produced the same national outcome in every presidential election since 1904 - except in 1956 and our most recent 2008 election. But what about social media? Could Myspace, Facebook or Twitter be the new election bellwethers? Each of these sites displayed more supp…

2h 25m....That's how long it took me to walk into the church , cast my vote and exit today. You are damn right I took my sticker!
Saw a few familiar faces....a few people I recognized from my neighborhood...lot's of mom's toting youngsters...and a guy in scrubs who told me IU hospital gives them 3h to vote...he had taken a vacation day to honor his civic duty.
I didn't really complain about the time it took. I actually thought about how many times in my life I wasted at least 2h30m on somethin…

I love basketball, so when a story like this appears, I find it hard not to watch. Personal stories of sacrifice and hardship are always great storylines. That's why this one was no different.
The Game of Change, I believe didn't just chronicle the racial discrimination happening in our nation or college basketball, it went a little deeper than that. It showed how one man's ideals and convictions, changed a university and a town along with it's people. This man started a chain of events that wo…

Going into this documentary, I wasn't really sure what it was all about. I didn't read the brief explanation to give me some insight on what I might be seeing. I wanted to keep it that way. No ill conceived prejudices or judgements on my part going in to view it.
Life of a Child is about the continuing struggle with a disease that is killing more people today than HIV or AIDS, it's Diabetes. I was struck by the stories of three young children living in India so poor that they can't afford insul…

Holocaust films are pretty common and we always have an idea of how they will end. A Secret falls neatly into that category, but has an artistic viewpoint that makes it unique. For example, flashbacks are done in color and scenes in the now are in black & white. An artistic way of saying, I think, that the past has never died at the expense of the present. Shadows of the little boy's, Francois, "imaginary" brother flash on and off throughout the first half-hour or so and then gradually becom…

Complex, intertwining, funny, and intense just a few words to describe Captain Abu Raed and yes, there were subtitles.
Filmed in the country of Jordan in 23 days with a budget of 2 million, this is a masterful film crafted out of the idea that not all Arabs are what's depicted in the news or by our own judgements. This is a movie that shows how everyday social issues affect everyone, even those living in Jordan.
It's a beautiful film depicting one man's journey of being an introverted, isolated…

This powerful film chronicles a bit of the terror, heartbreak, and victory of Emmanuel Jal, rap star and former child soldier from Sudan. It is a meaningful piece that unpacks only a bit of the complexities of the violence in Darfur, instead focusing on painting the colors of Jal's life -- bright and dark -- as you listen in on how Jal has processed his astonishingly difficult life and how he has emerged as a shining voice in the international music scene. The film is carefully crafted, shadowin…

I received my reminder email yesterday about Blog Action Day. If you don't know what it is, and would like to participate, please check out
www.blogactionday.org. This year is the 2nd annual event, and this year's topic is poverty. The goal is that if the over 7,500 worldwide bloggers write one post on one day, that for at least one day, we will all take the time to think about what we can all do to stop poverty.
I recently posted an update with a video on :…

Party's over.
We had two final full houses for our show. We turned people away on Saturday night and had to add chairs to our Sunday performance.
Karen did one of our pre-show songs("I didn't know that our romance had ended until you poisoned my food.") with Scott Ballantine, who has been playing with Karen at the Canal Point Grill on Sunday nights all summer. She did beautifully.
A gender studies professor from Butler came up and talked about the fantastic politics of the piece, a pair of peopl…

Another surprising night. Another amazing acknowledgement of the power of WORD OF MOUTH. I've done quite a few shows (Shakespeare in My Room in Indy, Dear John in Bloomington) where there is a wonderful production and no one in the chairs and you cancel the show and eat the money because nobody came.
This doesn't seem to be the case with ASSHOLES AND AUREOLES. We had a full house and a leap-to-the-feet standing ovation last night. Two more shows to go and Karen and Eric and I are so grateful! Er…

I am at rehearsal for SHERLOCK HOLMES, doing Fringe and driving back and forth to Bloomington so it's very hard to commit to seeing people's shows. I apologise to anyone who might be growling about that. I know I would be.
We had a really good house last night (Tues.) and are celebrating the fabulous NUVO cover and Nell Weatherwax's FIVE STAR REVIEW. So well deserved. We'll be seeing her after our show on Sat. PM. AND I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP is the title of her show.
She's superb.
There do seem…

We heard from Leonora! People have been asking about our director, Leonora Trey. We heard, via her son, that she's following our success long distance from California and is proud of us! While her health is not the best, she says she doesn't give a damn about that when she hears that another of her babies (her shows) is doing well. Thank you, sugar pie! We are trying to be nasty yet elegant, just as you advised.

Wow.
We had a full house for opening and a standing ovation at curtain call!! Then today, with a 1:30 p.m. curtain that we were sure would assure us a second tech with at most 30 people, we had half a house and a very happy half-house it was!
Wow.
Eric Pfeffinger (co-creator of the show, official in charge of writing) really liked it and his beautiful spouse had a great time at the Saturday show, even living through the first scene, which has special and immediate meaning for her.
Lots of theatr…

The thing at the Fire Fighters Museum was inside! Relief! Also, it was nice to see the inside of a place that for YEARS has served me as a learning-lines-relaxing-wall while working at The Phoenix.
I liked the Clown at Work guy and I liked the guy with the arms jokes. If I knew his name I'd mention it.
We got a wonderful response from the crowd -- lots of laughs even though the bit we chose was from the middle of a piece.
Hope all goes well for everyone.

Today Outside?
We're ready to do one of the squeaky-cleaniest 3 minutes of ASSHOLES AND AUREOLES today, what I like to call the "Knock-knock section." It's part of the longest of our 6 scenes. It takes place at a women's shelter during a theoretical role-playing training.
It always makes people laugh, so I'm hoping it will be acceptable. Our show is definitely not child's play.
I'm watching the weather, though, since I think this is supposed to be an outside event.
We'll see!
If you want…

A little back ground first. We have lived in our house for 5.5 years now. We live about 2 blocks from the main back gate. You name it at the fair and I have probably seen it go by my house either on the way in or on the way out. Being so close we figured we could dread the traffic and the mess that the fair brought to our neighborhood or we could whole heartedly embrace the fair and everything about it. We love the fair......would go every day if we could....just as the fair board about the guy…
