Desmond Turner and Jesus Christ: ‘Everyone has a story’

On Friday, Desmond Turner was sentenced to life without parole, plus 88 years, for the more than two dozen charges associated with the 2006 execution-style slayings of an Hispanic family of seven in Indianapolis. It was the third and final phase of a criminal trial that began in October, and a case that began nearly three [...]

Blood from a stone: new study finds low- and middle-income in unfair tax squeeze

Chalk up another reason why America’s poor keep getting poorer. Recently, I looked at a trend that showed working-class Americans were losing work hours at an historically faster rate than upper-income earners — a factor that some have argued is a contributor to today’s growing inequality gap. Today, a new report released by the Institute on Taxation [...]

Video: Hamilton Avenue, ‘the symbol of all the horrible violence we saw that year’

On June 1, 2006, around 10 pm, a stacatto burst of gunfire pierced the calm of the summer evening on North Hamilton Avenue. When the echoes had subsided, seven members of the Albarran / Covarrubias family were dead — executed in cold blood in their Indianapolis home. Three of the victims, found huddled together [...]

Unemployment: guess who’s getting the biggest squeeze? And how about those green jobs?

Barry Ritholtz, over at The Big Picture Blog, offered an interesting macro perspective right before today’s unemployment numbers were released, which showed unemployment jumping to 10.2%: We stand at one of those odd junctions, when bad news will be perversely good news. A weak [Non Farm Payroll] report will be more confirmation that QE will continue [...]

Benefit for Lee Bender, former pro-skateboarder with Multiple Sclerosis

Some of you may have watched the video I made about Lee Bender as part of my “Real Faces of Health Care” series (more installments soon, I promise). Lee was a pro skateboarder for years before being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2007. Since then, because of the way MS has affected his sense of [...]

"Smaller Indiana" enclaves add security to our lives

Check out this short film by emerging Hoosier filmmaker and writer, Austin Considine, who interviews Dr. David Bodenhamer from the IUPUI Polis center on our basic and inherent need to create enclaves to shut out the chaos of everyday existence. This film (and the accompanying post) depict how this need was exploited by real estate lenders/bu… Continue

20+ Great Gifts for Kids you Can’t Get at Wal-Mart

There are lots of reasons we sometimes hesitate—even bah humbug—over buying gifts for kids this time of year. Last year it was the lead paint scare. This year it’s finances. I’ve been wondering since I heard the horrible story about the Wal-Mart worker and shopper who were trampled on Black Friday, what the shoppers that day could have possibly wanted so desperately to cause a such a mad dash.

Cheap electroni… Continue

Don’t cut that marketing budget yet

I recently did some research on marketing budgets in the wake of the financial crisis. You might be surprised to find out what I found out. And some studies support the moves the biggest names in branding are making in this time of economic uncertainty. You can read the article here and get links to download some actual study results--one for free.

Paul Newman says thank you and goodbye

If you haven't seen this video yet of Paul Newman saying goodbye and thanking everyone for supporting his foundation, now would be a good time.

With the frenzy on Wall Street and everyone worried about money, take a minute to see what can really be done if we worried a little more about how we use our money rather than how we get more. And then promise me, if any of us have anything left after this economic crisis is over, you'll share some with someone in need.

Diane, my name is Eric Kallin and I am a fellow Smoosier. Further, I am also the founder and principal of the Indiana Biz Network. I'd like my organization to learn more about your biz from your first-hand representation and learn ways we might be able to be a source of new clients and potentially a source of knowledge that would help you run your biz with an even higher efficiency. Would you like to attend our Broad Ripple Chapter Tuesday, August 26th 9:30 am networking mixer at Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Home and take a few minutes to give us specific ideas of how to help you?

Cordially,
