Smaller Indiana

Making people and ideas findable

If you could change anything about SI what would it be?

- Move off of the Ning Platform
- Add more profiles fields
- Improve the group search
- Have regular content produced that is relevant to your industry

Comment below, we're supposed to be the Social Media experts in Indy, so how would we develop this community to better fulfill the SI mission of "Making People and Ideas Findable"

Great question, Chip!

I wish that SI was extensible. We can create new groups and start new discussions, but the actual mechanisms behind Smaller Indiana are set in stone. For example, the email notifications that you get when you subscribe to a discussion are terrible. They could include the content of the replies, but instead you have to click on the link, rewind back to the last comment you read, and then pick up where you left off. There's also a constant problem with spam on SI. It seems like every week I come across someone blatantly cross-posting the same message to multiple groups. This is easy to solve programmatically.

Ning DOES have some extensibility, but I understand it's pretty weak. They shut down their full API last year. So while I would hate for SI to leave Ning, I don't know that it can grow in many different ways while staying on this platform.

What do you think?

A few things to consider before joining Smaller Indiana:
1. Please use your real name (first and last) when you sign up, or we cannot open your account

2. Please do not use logos or commercial images for your profile photo

3. Events should be posted in the events calendar

4. You can post pretty much anything you want on your own personal page (self promotion, etc), and you can change the style of your personal profile page to reflect your corporate identification if you so choose.

5. Please keep all comments civil and polite. It's OK to feel strongly about a subject, and it's OK to be critical of ideas, but please refrain from personal attacks of any kind.

If you witness or experience any issues, please contact admin@smallerindiana.com and we will look into the matter.

6. Smaller Indiana is supported by its members, and by corporate sponsors. If you're interested in learning more about sponsorship, please call Pat Coyle at 317 332 7878.
