Soorry!

It's taken me a while to get back in the loop because I have been out there being the consummate networking and PR professional and it has kept me a little busy. It's fun to read of your experiences. In this business we have so many unique situations that I just like to read and say, "That happened to you, too!"

How many times have you run across a prospect that has nothing to say and just looks at you and shrugs his shoulders saying, "I dunno! I just run the business."

Arrrrrgggg!

Multicultural Public Relations and Marketing Strategies tour stops in Indy

The election of the country's first minority president, Barack Obama, has reignited lively discussions about race and culture in mainstream media as well as in everyday life.

The magnitude of this historical victory makes the sheer mention of Obama's name create a higher level of responsible communication practices for PR and other marcom professionals around the world. While multiculturalism certainly is not a new topic, how we discuss and address minorities and diversity issues on behalf of our organizations and clients has significantly changed.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau projections, minorities — now roughly one-third of the population — are expected to become the majority by 2042, and are projected to be 54 percent majority in 2050. Is your organization poised for the obvious shift in communication practices? As a communications leader in your business, how will you know if you are "meeting the mark" in your messages to growing minority audiences?

Now is the time to reassess your minority communications program. Please join us on Wednesday, Feb. 11 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Hilton, downtown Indianapolis, for "From Media Relations to Measurement: Maximizing your Multicultural Initiatives in 2009." The program will begin at 11:45 a.m. to allow time for announcements and the presentation.

The presentation is brought to us by PRSA's 2009 Multicultural Public Relations and Marketing Strategies Tour and features Manny Ruiz, president, Hispanic PR Wire, a PR Newswire company. Ruiz, co-chair of PRSA's national diversity committee, will offer insights, tactics and tools for the execution and measurement of successful multicultural public relations programs with a concentration on media relations.

Discussion topics will include 1) common mistakes marketers make in targeted multicultural or integrated campaigns, 2) similarities and differences in media preferences among the different ethnic groups and 3) key ingredients of an effective multicultural marketing program.

Change has come, indeed. Be the on leading edge for your organization. Hope to see you on Feb. 11. Register here.

It doesn't matter whether you're a rookie or a seasoned professional, we can all learn from each other. That's why I created an online community for us. Happy Hour is a social network for Hoosier communication, graphic design, social media and PR students, faculty and practitioners. At Happy Hour our goal is to network and collaborate – to bring together the best and brightest Hoosier communication professionals and rising stars. Happy Hour is more than connections and learning – it’s about you helping others.

When we get 100 members, we'll have a launch party. If you have any questions, please contact me here at Smaller Indiana, or at rodger@yourprguy.com.

At Happy Hour the cover is free. Your conversation is on the house.

Hello all! Great to see this group on here - after all, PR professionals are working in a very new and different world with social networks such as these. I am also a Butler University grad with a degree in arts administration and minors in PR and music. I am also currently working on obtaining my master's degree in PR at IUPUI. Looking forward to getting to know you all!
Best,
Ericka

Hello!
I just found the Hoosier PRSA group. I am very familiar with the PRSA because I check the website nearly every day to aid my current job search. If any group members have a suggestion as to other places I may need to look, I would greatly appreciate any advice. (I just graduated from Butler in December, with a Journalism degree in Public Relations and Advertising.)
Thanks
Stephanie

Hi, Cissi:
Welcome! I think you'll find Hoosier Chapter PRSA a great resource. Please also check out our website: www.hoosierprsa.org. There's a link to national PRSA, too. Plenty of resources for communication professionals.
Best,
dh
