2009 Honorary Survivors-Race for the Cure

The 2009 Race for the Cure Honorary Survivors have been chosen.

Adrienne Harlow
In 2009, the Race for the Cure will have two Honorary Survivors. Each one has a unique story to tell and will reach audiences that need to hear of their journey. Adrienne Harlow, at the tender age of 19, was diagnosed with breast cancer after being dismissed by several doctors because they said she was too young to have breast cancer. Adrienne is featured in October's issue of Seventeen. She is a full time college student and hopes to reach out to university students letting them know that you are never too young to get breast cancer.

Nadia Miller
Nadia Miller is a young professional mother of a four year old daughter. Two of her aunts along with her grandmother were diagnosed but survived breast cancer. Her sister did not survive. Even with this family history, Nadia still thought it couldn't happen to her and was shocked when she was diagnosed in 2007 at age 28! Nadia tested positive for the BRCA1 gene and opted to have further preventive surgery. She hopes to reach out to African American women who have a 35% higher breast cancer death rate than Cucasian women even though they are less likely to get breast cancer in the first place.
