Smaller Indiana + Indy Fringe

Smaller Indiana is proud to be a sponsor of IndyFringe Theatre Festival. Just like last year, we will have tickets available for Smoosiers who want to go to the shows and blog about their experiences.

If you are interested in getting involved, please join this group and we'll keep you informed of the many ways you can help. Here are a few of the highlights which we'll be promoting:

Aug 7 - Visual Fringe Opening and August First Friday on Mass Ave
Aug 13 - Longest Dinner (Fundraiser for Fringe, Cultural Trail and Slow Food)
Aug 20 - Opening Night Parade & Party, featuring 3 minute previews and the Playboy Psychonauts
Aug 21-30 - Shows! 53 different productions in six venues

Smaller IN will have a Night on the Fringe prize package to give away. It will include tickets, dinner on Mass Ave and an overnight stay at the Nestle In B & B.

We need bloggers - we've got 2 free tickets to each of over 50 Fringe Shows, and we need Smoosiers to use the tickets...and return to SI to blog about their Fringe experiences. If you're interested in blogging, or helping to recruit bloggers, please contact Erick Deckers.

Even if you don't get free tickets, please, go to the Fringe and return to SI and share your experiences. Blog about it. Post photos or videos. We want to hear and see your stories!

Smoosier Manunya Nookong will be helping out as communications intern on the Fringe and other SI projects this summer. If you have questions and you can't reach Pat, or Erik, you can reach out to Manunya. Festival questions can also be directed to IndyFringe intern (and Smoosier) Christina Lear

If you bring kids down to see the sell-out Blunder Construction stay a bit later and take them to the family friendly Simple Joys. An Indiana Audtions blogger called said: "This is edgy, experimental theatre at its best. Granted, not edgy like say-a-bunch-of-crass-lines edgy or naked edgy; more like play-with-balloons-and-plastic-toys edgy." http://tiny.cc/mc8Yn Check it out tonight!

IndyFringe has hit record numbers all festival long thanks to all of the wonderful Smoosiers who have been coming out and sparking conversation here about the shows. Come out for one more day of fun and Fringing!

Sex/Death at TOTS was hilarious. Well played comedy for grown-ups! Humanature at Earth House was a nice way to round out the evening.

Via Susan Masek:

"I Do, I Do in Delhi" is written and performed by Karen Thibodeau. It is a "slice of Life" piece about an Indian wedding she experienced. She played at least 10 different characters (that I counted), and very well. Her descriptions beautifully brought her experience to life for me. Her show is without a hint of irony, so many plays these days are so... "nudge, nudge, wink, wink!" and it was refreshing. The characters are strong, the transitions excellent, but I was a bit taken abock in that there seemed to be little structure: no begining, middle, end, no climax. It was like watching someone's travel slides at a cocktail party: lovely, sweet, a nice evening.

While several of my friends were talking about the Indy Fringe Festival I had the misconception of connecting it with the Pride festival. Deciding to pass on the event made sense to me at that time. One of those same friends came to me and said she was in a jam and needed someone to blog on four of the plays. She gave me no choice other than which ones she needed to have reviewed. Wanting to be seen and heard in the blogosphere, I took all four. 7 (x1) Samurai, Another Classic of Western Literature, The Tragical Ballad of Black Bonnet, and Mr. Charles, Currently of Palm Beach were scheduled and, with steno notebook in hand, I was ready.

In an ad for IRT on the back cover of the festival program the statement was made; “This fringe movement blatantly defies our midwestern values while challenging traditional intellectual sensibilities.” The initial reaction was why should I have my midwestern values, which seem to be quite suitable, “blatantly” defied? “Traditional intellectual sensibilities” doesn't seem like something that required challenging. Visions of raw humor, outrage against the establishment, and blasphemous rantings, abetted by my wife's attempted discouragement of my participation, made me question why I was doing these reviews. The commitment had been made and the adventure began.

May I say that I enjoyed my participation with Indy Fringe, and from my observations and comments, not really critical reviews, I think that three out of four ain't bad.

My comments can be found at:

Another Classic of American Literature

Saturday morning (10:30 AM). More photos by Daniel Axler, from Friday's IndyFringe, have been added to the beginning of the embedded slide show that follows (and I think I see Jill's smiling face in there somewhere!):

Well, whoever shot it, it was lovely. I hope to see lots of Smoosiers tonight at Andrea Merlyn's Greatest Hits (and missus!) 7:30 at TOTS.

Just for the record, I didn't take any of those photos in the embedded slide show. The photos were taken by Daniel Axler, Mr. Nikon Man! Dan takes photographs. I'm more of a snapshot kind of guy.
