I go to the The Shelbi Diner a lot and have never gotten a burger. Not that I doubt Andy's experiencethings like Thai pastas, fruit and heirloom lettuce salads and daily quiches. Dinner is fine dining with pork loin, venison and seafood pastas. You can eat on the roof with an amazing view of downtown

I would highly recommend Ye Olde Library in Carmel. The building is the fomer Carnegie Library on Main Street west of the high school and the food is GREAT. Lot's of daily specials, very fresh salads (I highly recommend the steak and blue cheese salad) and a great atmosphere for a business lunch.

They accept reservations for lunch and dinner and have a sports bar, Woody's, in the basement.

For all you south siders, there is a gem hidden next to the University of Indianapolis. The Shelby Street Diner is God's gift to the world of Cheeseburgers. No kidding, this burger is bigger than your head. It's a caloric nightmare but you won't mind it too much... Unless of course you add the Foot of Onions rings to your order.

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

Did nobody pick up on the NEANDERTHAL BURGER at Bob Cross's suggested place? Sounds great!

A lunch place that I'd recommend is called The Bread Ladies... http://www.thebreadladies.com/
And a nice dinner spot is called Carnegie's...

Both of these might be a bit of a drive for some but these are both very yummy!

All I have to say is if you want some soul food that is just as good as down south or in NYC you must check out the Mississippi Belle

Bob, you said the magic words. Chocolate coke. I'm soooooo there.
Bob Cross Comment by Bob Cross on June 14, 2008 at 10:02am
There's nothing better for me than to see a hunk of pork loin being pounded silly on a grill, being cooked to perfection with a secret teriyaki sauce, and being served overlapping the bun on all sides by at least an inch. Seeing the meat particles flying does something to me at a gut level - literally. That is what you willl get at the Rockola 50's Cafe at 5730 Brookville Rd in Indianapolis. This is truly an Indy gem.

Located across from the International Harvester plant, they are open for breakfast and lunch and serve great food that is bad for you. Great value with lunch for two at around $20 but with leftovers for sure. Try the grilled tenderloin, neanderthal burger, grilled chicken, reuben, deep-fried mushrooms, onion rings, vanilla, cherry, or chocolate cokes, or maybe the best chocolate malt I have ever had, served in the stainless steel mixing cup. Speaking of shakes/malts, some of my family have tried the cinnamon shake and rave about it.

Plan your lunch adventure here with patience or a back-up plan. The restaurant only seats about 16 in four booths and 8 or 9 at the counter. On Saturdays at noon, I have had to stand in the center of the restaurant waiting on a table to free up.

They accept credit cards and you must stand at the register to pay. THey close at around 2:45 pm and often close on days when the husband and wife owners decide to close it. Trust me - you can't go wrong here.
