Making people and ideas findable

Last night I had the glorious task of cleaning the family fish tank. So to make the moment more tolerable, I thought I would give iTunes Genius a go. I selected a John Mayer song, hit genius, and was thrilled with the play-list it created. Songs and artists were being played that I had long since forgot about. Personally, I think this is one of the greatest features added to iTunes in a really long time.

What has been your experience. Have you tried it? Do you like it? Do you care?

I have to admit, I didn't think that the feature would be anything I'd be interested in. However, after selecting a song in my playlist and clicking on the Genius button, the playlist that was created for me was really pretty sweet. Now I'm pretty addicted to it.

I've also burned a quick disc of the playlist to throw into my car too.

I think it is pretty cool for suggesting stuff on iTunes that you may like. And for the other side of it, I picked one of my favorite songs and it seemed to know what the rest of my favorites were in my library. I've been using it more to find new music though.

I really love iTunes Genius. It seems to select songs based on a combination of genre and release date. I am sure there is some sort of complicated algorithm behind it, but the main thing is that you can create a playlist based on one song and you end up with a much better selection than any radio station playlist.

The only down side is that my library is pretty eclectic and I often get a message that Genius can't create a playlist because it doesn't recognize the song.

I've used it a few times, but only saved one of them so far. It's neat in that it brings out songs I may have forgotten about, but generally I find it makes some pretty big stylistic leaps. I wish it took other factors like BPM in to account - not that I have BPM set for all my songs, but I am trying to set it, and it'd be nice if iTunes Store files had it set already.
