Women outnumber men in most social nets
Fast Company - Recent data shows that the number of women logging on to social-networking sites far exceeds the number of men. Information is Beautiful recently presented the information, as gathered by Google Ad Planner.

LinkedIn and YouTube bring in an equal number of men and women, but evidently far more women than men are flocking to Twitter, Facebook, and MySpace--64% of MySpace users, for example, are female. Digg is the only site that attracts more men.

That the Digg population is largely male should come as no surprise, but what about the other stats?

Are women just more social in general, or is there some other explanation?

This is a just a visual manifestation of what Tom Peters always said - Women Rule! At the risk of committing a "Larry Summerism" I would venture to say that men and women are wired differently, an artifact of evolution going back to the hunter/gatherer days. Women are good at empathizing, making connections, and in general seem to be more sincere then men.

I agree with PK, women are just wired better to "make connections" and let's face it that's the real basis of social sites.

A perfect example would be the tragic death of two local teenagers here in my small town and the posts/comments on Facebook. I saw many more women posting heart felt condolences and statements such as "Hug your children today" than I did men. Most of the men who commented left shorter responses than the women did.

Women just rule everything period. It's amazing women allowed themselves to be oppressed as long as they did (you have to go back a few generations). It's pathetic that men did the oppressing. They (women) dominate nearly every hive out there. Woman are my main demographic when marketing and selling and for a good reason. Woman are a great audience and, YES, they are more productively social. Period.

Guy talk: (In their cool, calm voice) Hey man, see the game last night?
Girl talk: OMG! Did you SEE that freakin' AMAZING game last night?!!!! BTW, At half time, Itold ALLLLLL of my friends about you and what you're up to. Here's 10 names and numbers I collected for you. Better yet, let me schedule a breakfast, lunch AND dinner to introduce you.

I get the understatement and exaggeration here, BUT it's really not that far off. My friend-girls always make things happen for me. They're great sneezers! My guy friends, by comparison, are very good networkers, but they're no Super Woman (or, at least I hope not!).

So "women just rule everything, period" but the creators of Facebook, Twitter, Myspace & Digg are all men. Huh?

I'm simply giving credit where credit is due. My statement obviously needs to be taken with a grain of salt as you obviously have. It was designed to make a point that woman are a major player in just about all things worthwhile. Regarding your examples of Facebook, Twitter, etc... It's kind of like a man building the home (Facebook) and the woman making it more presentable (Marketing, Social Web). Just my opinion.

@David Mark,

Good reply, I totally agree: If women are involved, it's almost definitely worth while. Great point!

They are smart, they knew women would catch the bait. Now they have all our secrets!

Here's the thing @Parke Ladd, I do have to admit that women do have that kind of networking and social aspect to them (Making facebook presentable, according to David). But smart men that realize this and able to admit it use them wisely. Example; for a business, using a female as a company twitter, to spread the name and make connections. And smart men that know this power of women, build them platforms like facebook and twitter so the men can become rich while females spread the word and network, brining the networth of these sites higher. Just going back to David's example, presentable homes can be sold for lot higher than just a home.

The answer is simple, because women like to talk. I mean, wouldn't you agree that (in most cases) men use their cell phones to communicate, but women use their's to conversate? To me it's simple, women like to talk more than men. So if it's true that "women rule social networking", to me it's not a big stretch since social networking is basically another form of talking.

Women speak more freely than men about most things. Also, women are better multi-taskers, they can work, twitter, update on facebook, all while managing a household and taking care of their family. Are they just tweeting and updating more times, or are there actually more women accounts?

Here's my opinion: Men like women, women like women, and women tend to feel a need to keep up with relationships more than the average male from what I see. We thrive off of bonding and being constantly in tune with our surroundings and network. I think it's just one of the things that we are naturally blessed with-an allure that attracts all sexes in every medium/venue available.
