Smaller Indiana

Making people and ideas findable

Anyone driving along Interstate 65 between Indy and Chicago will notice dozens of Windmills in the fields near Brookston. We were wondering what is the back story behind these turbines? Who put them there? How much power do they generate? will we see more in the future? Funny thing...we googled this question and one of the answers was provided by Indiana's own, Cha Cha

Does anyone now the story behind the Brookston, IN windmills? Share your info here

I have two good friends who are involved in these projects across the state. Ones father in law runs the business of putting them in and the other friend puts in the electrical configuration for them. Many different companies come together for projects like these. I don't know if they did the Brookston one, but they have worked on several throughout the state.

Funny thing about these, you still need electricty to power at a 50% rate so the turbines create 100% of the windmill power.

My aunt-in-law lives in Delphi and they were saying the windmills do not generate power for Indiana, rather for other cities across the country. I couldn't wrap my head around this. Still baffled. Could be hearsay, though.

I wouldn't be surprised at all. If IN cannot use surplus power then it has to be sent somewhere - the problem is we still don't have a good enough system to store electricity at least the kind we use. I also think unlike coal and nuclear plants Wind Mills have to be located in geographically suitable areas with good wind patterns. That may be why they might be located in IN but not necessarily supplying power to the state. But I do hope that there is some kind of reciprocal arrangement.

Your explanation makes sense, and that was basically what my relatives were saying, as well. But I agree; hopefully we are reaping some sort of benefit.
