Making people and ideas findable

My morning started with a demanding double-bark “We need to go out!!!”

I am not a particularly early morning person, so I dragged myself out of bed, pull over a dress, after a second of thinking I decided to add panties to that outfit (boy, was I glad I did!) and finally opened my eyes wider I went downstairs to pet them for a second, to leash them and walk them out.

My 4-legged kids are 11 years old Pekingeses. My boy had 2 major back surgeries and my girl is getting… well… she does not see well now. Both had attacked by large neighbors dogs in a past and the surgery was a direct result of the attack.

We were walking and I was on the phone with my husband who is having a wonderful time in Miami (normally morning walk is his responsibility).
All of the sudden I see a large dog, Sanbernar, is pushing my female dog’s neck to the ground with his mouth, I pulled her close, Sanbernar went after my poor male dog and did the same. I was screaming on the top of my lungs. Never ever was I screaming that loudly and for such a long time in my life (I could not even talk after that for 3 hours).
I finally managed to cover both of my kids with my body; my dress was all over my head (thank God I was wearing everything I supposed to wear). An owner of the dog (I actually think I was the owner’s sister) was running around even before I managed to fall on the ground and instead of grabbing her dog she was demanding that I should keep quiet - pretty much like “would you please shut up he is not going to bite”.

I sure did attract several neighbors who offered me to call the police.
And I choose not too…
Was I wrong? I still get no apology.
How can I be sure it will never happen again? Its already happened 3 times in their lives – it cause us two(!!) back surgeries (we paid almost $6,000).
Last time my female dog was in coma for an hour and it took me 20 minutes to pull her out of comma and then I did not remember anything until the next morning…
Is it being a foreigner in me that I don’t want to upset my neighbors?

What Would You Do?

I did! Your message was a last straw.

It was not easy... I do believe they are good people and I think they are out of town... otherwise they would come to apologize.

You made me to report the accident and I thank you for that!

Genie!

Do you remember my fiance, Will Rivers?

He was attacked by a Rott yesterday and has a pulled muscle in his thigh from fighting the dog off.

He said the owner actually tried to get bad with him for beating the dog off!

What kind of dog is Sanbernar?

It sure came from you.

LOL! I thought 'Sanbernar' was his name. haha

Hmm, odd, Saint Bernard's are typically a pretty docile breed. They usually just lie around and don't do much. I can't envision a Saint Bernard hurting anything. They are big though, and probably don't know their own strength. I hope your little guy is o.k.:) He sure is cute.

Genie,

I am so sorry this happened to you. My dog Sydney (she is in doggy heaven) was attacked a few years ago by my neighbor's Rott. I pulled the 100+ pound Rott off of her with my left arm and threw it across the yard. Still to this day, I don't know how I did it. I just had to save my baby. You were very brave protecting your babies. I pray that they are OK.

I am glad you also reported the issue. All dog owners have to take responsibility for their dogs. I know accidents happen, but, all animals should be able to be safe. Now we have a little chihuahua named Brewster. I always keep a watchful eye out when we are outside. You never know when a loose dog might show up in our yard.

Please keep us posted!

Omigosh! That baby is so cute, and I know first hand the protection you want to give to your "kids" especially after all they have been through. I would file a report, or try and talk to the neighbor maybe write them a letter and let me them know the fear you have of their bigger dog and what that dog has done. You know what, get a little mean, after all these are your babies that are hurt and will probably be in pain for the rest of their lives. Tell the neighbor of all the instances that have happened and then tell him that if it happens again you will call Animal Care and Control or something of that nature but it looks as though you may need to get a little pissy with him!

Thank you, Lindsey, for your support.

I was hoping to meet you at SI 6000 party tonight...

You should have filed a report. From what I understand if a single dog is reported twice, then it is required that they be put down.

Dogs are great animals, but if they are jeopardizing the safety of you our your loved ones then they need to be dealt with. There are obviously many options for this, as I am not suggesting you just immediately put them down.

Yikes! Twice? As I mentioned before, I can't envision a St. Bernard truly trying to hurt another dog. They just don't have that aggressive disposition about them. But, he probably doesn't know his own strength and because of this, he could easily injure Genie's dog(s). I don't think the St. Bernard should be put down because of this though. Something obviously needs to be done, but putting the 'Nard down for the dirt nap isn't the answer in this case I don't think.

Of course not. He is a good dog, and his parents are good people. I think they are out of the town, otherwise I'd hear from them by now. I am pretty sure that the lady was a sister who was staying in with dogs.

The sad thing is that we were attacked from their another dog almost 11 years ago...
and that I have some kind of strange rash on my face, had to go to dermatologist and was prescribed antibiotic :(

well... bad things happened to good people...
my kids seems ok so far - and its really more important...
