Smaller Indiana

Making people and ideas findable

Will you help design our new marketing page?

Smaller Indiana is planning to launch several new pages to make certain content easier to find. These pages will filter content based on certain keywords (tags), and present them on specially named pages. In addition, these pages will import content from around the Web, with an emphasis on local Websites and Web authors.

Here's the first attempt at our marketing page

Here's where the content is coming from:
1. URL - marketing.smallerindiana.com (all pages will follow this convention)
2. Twitter feed: #si and #marketing or #simarketing (#si will be common denominator)
3. Content partner: Marketing Technology blog (open to other partners for all pages)
4. Groups, Smoosiers, Events, Blogs and Forum threads that were tagged with the word "marketing" or categorized "marketing."

Can you recommend ways to make the marketing page useful?
If there is other content you'd like to see on the marketing page, other features (e.g a directory of marketing companies is one idea)...or even other content themes, we'd value your thoughts.
Share your thoughts here

Do you think these pages will add value to your SI experience?
Once we get the marketing page done, we plan to launch pages for arts, green, technology, business, energy, government, opinion...maybe even sports. We'd love to get your suggestions on themes you'd like to see.

I think many small businesses deal with food so I think a page on that could be very useful.

So, a local food business / food services page?

I should note - please don't let the existing marketing page limit your thinking. Blow it up! We introduce this page with a familiar SI look and feel...but we can do whatever we want...so let us know if you think content themed pages would be valuable, and if so, how would you like to see them arranged. We'll used the marketing page as the test...and we'll go from there. Thanks in advance for your input.

I love it! I think it's a great way to boost the group participation on the site as well. Nice work!

Pat:

Great idea. In general, I think the focus should remain on Indiana -- Indiana sources for the most part, unless the non-Indiana source is discussing how the topic relates to Indiana.

As we have been discussing, I hope we move to such a page for INDIANA Gov 2.0 (including local government). Other topics might follow major activities already underway (so would have lots of Indiana links) -- life sciences, advanced manufacturing, technical training, health (as something for all of us to improve), health care (providers, insurance, regulators, et al.). I would recommend a similar division in sports -- perhaps athletics/exercise (for the activities we should do personally) and sports for the institutional forms -- schoolkid, college, pro. Energy in its various forms seems a potential topic or topics. The Sierra Club in me would suggest something like nature/wildlife/outdoors -- perhaps again a split like "outdoors" for the activities we do personally and "wildlife" or "nature preservation" for the policy/cultural issues. Music and the arts have a similar split -- practice versus concerts, painting versus museums.

Of course these splits are not complete -- to have a marathon to run in requires policy-type activity, one may do art or music in a public place in support of or requiring policy-type activity, etc. One can even study government in private. But my experience has been that while there is an overlap between those with a policy interest and those with a personal interest, the overlap is not complete, and it may be useful to have both.

I suspect no one is expecting or even hoping that somehow Pat or "Smaller Indiana" will magically create and maintain these pages. My expectation/hope is that a group will arise for each such page, perhaps with leadership chosen by the group or "Smaller Indiana", to help with creation and maintenance. If there is no such group for a given page, perhaps there is not enough of the right type of interest in that particular topic.

Rollie,

My initial strategy is to look to the NPO community for content and stewardship of many pages. There must be subject matter experts out there who would like to gain exposure through SI in exchange for a little content sharing, don't you think?

Pat:

Good idea, but not just NPO's. I could see a for profit hospital or insurance company (or even a professional sports team that has a winning streak going ) "sponsoring" a Wellness page, perhaps with money, but also with time from some of its professionals. Similarly, some agencies and individuals from state or local government or educational institutions might become critical parts of the creation and maintenance for certain topics.

Since we are at the bottom of the barrel with Youth/Adult Obesity and Smokers in this Country. Create a Fitness/Health section? We can donate our time with you guys/gals!

Having a Smaller Indiana Business/Person of the Week? Since so many of us are online and not getting a taste/teaser of a Kyle Lacy, Douglas Karr and the other 7,000 members and what they are all about? With so many of these businesses we hear about but don't know much the difference they are making in their community/city/town. Adding a video of this person/business. We see their faces, know their names, and website but nothing more personal/direct.

Smaller Indiana has many members from Indianapolis area but finding a way to reach so many more in other parts of the state. I would personally like to learn more about these people, businesses and non-profits trully around Indiana.

Featuring more non-profits of the week since their are so many in the State of Indiana that do great things we don't hear about. Adding video of them.

Having Give Aways/gift baskets/bags/goodie bags for different themes, holidays, military, colts, pacers, fever, brickyard, black expo, restaurants, conseco tickets, breast cancer, bridal, youth, seniors, Gift Bag of goodies for city of that city's local biz and so much more. Could easily have one each week! I'm sure business would love to donate gift certificates, services, and products!

Having a coupon section where Members could print them off for offers from all around Indiana.

2012!!!! Not to far away with Super Bowl. Any plans to leverage Smaller Indiana through marketing, advertising, etc.? Great way to kill it and draw new members! Have some ideas we would love to share in a meeting!

I didn't see it listed, so I'd like to see a business page. Could highlight best practice sharing in several areas... Account Management, Finance, Sales...etc

I'm hopeful that this new page will include the actual comment when it emails me to let me know that someone left a comment... Like facebook does. I would use SI a lot more if I didn't have to click into every email to see what people have said... let me read in the email and see if it is relevant to me.

I see that the new page has not updated the email notifications... It would be great if that were made possible.

I'd love to see a Performing Arts page (and a Fine Arts page for gallery openings, etc). We had that terrific ticket contest from the Indiana Ballet Company recently. Arts funding is way down everywhere, so having more ways for arts organizations with small budgets to get the word out, particularly world-class ones like IBC, would be a great function for such a page.
