Smaller Indiana

Making people and ideas findable

I recently joined this social networking site, and I saw nothing but infinite possibilities.

Now, I feel like it is as stuffy, click-y and unorginal as much of Indiana it self.

Share your views and experiences with Smaller Indiana...please.

Great points from both of you, I have seen the vitriol and the hate-speak coming from people who agree and disagree with me on other topics. At the same time isn't it OK for debate (point counter-point) to become HEATED and sometimes angry debate as long as the motives are trying to convince someone with facts that support an opposing view as opposed to sticking a complaint up on a wall.

Matthew is not the first to criticize SI or Hoosiers in general, but aren't I allowed to provide a counterpoint? That's what debate / conversation is to me. When you make statement like SI is "stuffy," I don't know you well enough to know what word means on its own - call me a slow Hoosier - but I need context.

Whether you wanted to "irk" people or not, this is a great conversation, let's keep it going here so people can engage instead of disconnecting the conversation.

I readily admit to "drinking to SI Kool aid" as it were and my viewpoint does fall in line more often with Hoosier sentiments. Despite the fact I disagree with what you have said here, Matthew, and what Joe has said in some forums, I still genuinely appreciate seeing Joe at lunatic or Burgerquest Lunch, or show up in forum conversation.

You seem to want ot change SI into something better than it is now. To move away from its current "stuffy, click-y and unoriginal" version. I'm listening? Where do we go from here?

All points of view must be taken into account to get a complete picture of anything.
But first, they must be heard. Most people are shy to express what they believe if
those beliefs seem to deviate from the norm. We know we'll be shot down, our
intelligence, patriotism, etc questioned. That's a shame.

Many of us dislike being boxed into a label as well. We are all so much more
than our position on abortion or god/God, sexuality, politics, etc.

The old adage, "never talk religion or politics," is often followed by members on
SI. When these topics are covered, they are often covered by those comfortable
that they are in the majority opinion. People let down their guard in conversation
with friends.

I haven't checked through the list of various groups on SI lately. Wonder if there
are any nihilists here...

There is a Secular Humanists group, and I invite anyone who might be interested to check in there.

jk :o), But I do think that Cat Story is friggin hilarious ... wow.... bubby and sissy and Jesus in the fur... that is how we know we are in indiana.
This picture below is just funny. It was probably created to mock or make fun of midwestern values, but It's still funny and I like it.

@mathewwilson: I don't know what you were looking for here, but if it was a homosexual hookup, baby killing festival or celebration, or a tree hugapolooza ... you might find that in Bloomington (Where I grew up) or Chicago Suburbs, or on Mass Ave., I am glad that you didn't find it here.

Since when does one's bedroom preferences make a site "interesting? everyone doesn't agree about everything, but Joe Shoemaker is right (as much as I hate uttering those words ;o)

7000 members, but most of us have lives... Companies to run, families to attend to... those members who spend more than 1 hour a day on Smaller Indiana need to get a life... everything in moderation right?... well, except for crack... crack is bad, can we agree on that, because chances are we don't agree on much else.

thanks for you thoughts, SI is a little stuffy, there are a lot of great unique creative people on here, many of them just read aren't the personality types to "put it out there" with their opinions.

P.S. I am creative, I recycle, I am politically Centered, I am a Christian, I am a White, Middle Class, Male ( although I think that all those terms do is put me in a box or limit me just like you. )

"Who You ARE precedes What you do"

Now quit your whining and get back to work.
