Smaller Indiana

Making people and ideas findable

I recently joined this social networking site, and I saw nothing but infinite possibilities.

Now, I feel like it is as stuffy, click-y and unorginal as much of Indiana it self.

Share your views and experiences with Smaller Indiana...please.

I get, and respect your point.
But, in reality, most people in general make me extremely uncomfortable...some even scared.
I am going to go out on a limb and be honest, I don't like most humans. Angsty as that may sound.

I applaud your logical, sane, calm reply (unlike Michael who can't make posts without his testosterone getting in the way).

That is why I wouldn't want to meet "online friends" offline.
I suppose is my conclusion.

Does it make you feel better about yourself to take cheap shots at people whom you don't even know? If I had moderator powers, you would be gone. Finito. Banned IP address, or whatever I had to do. Your negativity is nauseating.

I agree with anything Becky Pruitt says. Especially when she agrees with me :-)

Matthew

It's been more than a week since you started this discussion and it is interesting to read the first to the last posts and how the conversation has developed. From my point of view, you got people interacting and exchanging ideas despite the fact some took things too personally.

Something that hit me this morning as I read my own words is that I assume I know someone's intent behind a statement in these forums just based on the words they type alone. That is not always the case as I see their follow up statements. It is harder for me to understand someone without nonverbal gestures as well as voice inflection that goes along with the words.

Thanks again for posting

Yes it would be helpful if we could all use "mood" emoticons too. Pat? :o)

I must say I never once thought how useful they can be

Matthew, as some have noted I think you are catching SI in an inbetween phase. This community started out with a lot of energy and ideas coming into the site. It grew quickly and got a lot of attention. I think the community is coming out of the "dip"- Google Seth Godin "dip" if you don't know that reference.

Basically the initial enthusiasm has worn off and now people are engaging only so much as they get meaning and value from the site. I think we will see a gradual increase in activity as people like you start to engage and stir up conversations like this. I also blame Ning some since they have not done a major platform upgrade in over a year and I think some users, including myself, are getting platform fatigue.

My perspectives of Smaller Indiana are quickly developing as I use it more and more as a tool and a conversation point for networking and contacting other creatives like myself. I've seen certain groups and people join around the month of February and then fizzle out over time. The unfortunate thing is that some of these folks are the creative types I'm looking for to chat with.

I should also note that as I am using this site and LinkedIn as a contact jump-off point for talking about design with other professionals, that I am also becoming more and more developed about what I want in my professional life and am becoming more able to chat comfortably with other like-minded people in and out of Indianapolis.

With these things in mind, I hope more engaging conversations begin to develop alongside an increased membership base so we can see lively interests develop in the Circle City as well as throughout the state.
