Smaller Indiana

Making people and ideas findable

The numbers aren’t good. Only 26% of voters have a positive view of the GOP and only 7% say they feel “very positive” about the embattled party.

Former Reagan adviser Ed Rollins says the Republicans are simply irrelevant at the moment. Is the party that once appealed to everyone from Connecticut Yankees to Texas oilmen to Kid Rock to lawn-care store owners in Phoenix becoming a marginal movement?

If so, what or who can stop the tide? Could a guy like Mitch Daniels lead the party back to health? Or is the party over? Share your thoughts here

Sould Mitch run for president no. Should he be apointed to a major cabinet post HELL YES. He would make a great chief of staff, treasury secratry, director of OMB. Especially if the president happened to be someone like Newt Gingrich. These are spots where both his real world business experiance and his political experiance would do the most good. If, how ever we are looking for a hoosier president we need to look to Muncie. Mike Pence. He is one of the "new" republicans the media turn to when looking for a minority view point. He is not quite a household name yet, but he is gaining familiarty on an almost weekly basis. He needs to make more apperance on both conservative radio and T.V., and also on the Sunday morning talk shows. This is who we need to start groom for the presidancy.

AND WHOM WOULD YOU SUGGEST? OBAMA?

I think it would be good but only if he thinks he can affect some of the changes he has in Indiana.

It would be marvelous to have a serious minded candidate who could make points with the wit and wisdom of Mitch. He ought to play a significant roll, but I believe he is good to his word to not run. Republicans really screwed up by getting twisted up with the religious far right and letting spending get far out of control along with ethics. On the other hand, Pelosi and Reid are earning no points and actually make Bush look like a conservative on spending. But that relativity is absurd. As far as ethics is concerned, it appears to be lost on so many from both sides. President Obama is a good spokesman, but so far, that's his best skill: talking with a microphone... He has learned some things on the job as we all knew he would have to and he'll learn more (we can HOPE) as time goes on.

ABSOLUTELY.... EXPERIENCE IN BOTH BUSINESS AND GOVERNMENT... LEADERSHIP... FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY... FAMILY MAN... INTELLIGENT... CONSERVATIVE.......... UNDERSTANDS WHAT THIS NATION WAS BUILT UPON AND THAT YOU CANNOT BORROW YOUR WAY OUT OF A DOWNTURN... AND IS TOUGH ON TERROR... WHAT ELSE DO WE NEED? HE WOULD BE GREAT

Mitch has a spine, which the Republicans, as a national political organization, currently do not. This is a great time to actually define conservatism, to actually provide political discourse and diversity of ideology -- ideology that has good results, as seen from Indiana's fiscal condition. By that I mean we're one of the few states that isn't in financial freefall. No state is in perfect health, but we're so much better off than so many others.

I'm debating over my opinion on whether Mitch should run for President or Senator. The question is which capacity would provide the opportunity for greatest impact and use of his skills (Ian is right about being undermined). I'd vote for either one, and I hope we haven't seen the last of his involvement in political life.

Well, Kelly J, can't find anything nice to say? Guess you misstated your strength in your profile:

"My ability to find the positive in any situation."

Would you care to fully identify yourself and delineate the ways in which Gov. Daniels "sux" and by what measures he is overrated? I'm not being facetious, just encouraging you to take part in the mature exchange of information that makes Smaller Indiana different from the effusive commentary found at IndyStar.com.

Well first of all, I am a Democrat, so I may not be the best person to ask. But I personally believe that Mitch is incredibly shady. Think about it, he leased the toll road to a foreign company which was likely to fail and when they went bankrupt, we got the toll road back for less. But why would you lease the toll road to a company that may fail? Not only are we giving our ownership of a major road to a foreign company, but we're also gambling by turning it over to a company that hasn't done very successful things. All so he could get it back for cheaper and look like a hero? That's shady politics. I voted for Jill, I'd vote for Jill again.

I do admire what Mitch has attempted to for education though. I will say that for him.
