Smaller Indiana

Making people and ideas findable

When you need family portraits, where do you go?

When you need business shots?

When you need stock images?

If you could support local talent, would you prefer that to a chain like Olan Mills or a stock site like iStockphoto?

I guess to clarify, when I say local, I mean locally owned, small guy....

Sorry Nicki, my response has nothing to do with photos.

Mr. Flener,

I get everything you state. I often think about the same thing (National Co. w/ local employees, etc...). However, being a local guy with a local business who promotes locally owned businesses and also having executive experience working for national companies, I'll confidently state that "buying local (from locally owned non-franchise businesses)" is definitely the way to go and even in a global economy. Is it the ONLY way to go? No. But, it's the favorable way to go! I admit I purchase things from companies all over the world. Not a big deal. However, I'll always choose locally owned entities, especially restaurants, first. After all, I want what's good for my own "backyard". I'm aware the local McD's CO-OP, for instance, may put $ back into the local economy, but as a collective, the locally owned biz does much more for you and I.

My biz profits go straight back into the local economy and not off to a franchise, or corp in some other city, or country for that matter. Pound for pound, my business does more for Indianapolis because I am locally-owned. You're example of Olan Mills may be justified and it would also behoove you to choose "local" first.

Thanks for bring this up!

Okay, Nicki to directly answer your question- for family photos my preference is JcPenney Portrait Studios. We were actually there last weekend. They have good quality photos and great coupons. I like to feel I am getting a bargain without skimping on the quality.

If there is a need to use stock photos I check out any royal free image site. I really do not have a preference.

I like using locally owned businesses; however, in most cases, I like to receive a referral/recommendation before I do.

Thanks Tahneesha!

Even though "chains" employ local people, I do prefer both the accountability and the synergy of using a locally owned business. How can I ask for others' business if I don't do the same myself.

Personally, I prefer Erin Hession -- she is so talented and creative. Her photos have a "life" and "energy" to them that is amazing. Erin is a member of Smaller Indiana and her website is http://erinhession.com. She did both my son's senior pictures and our office photographs. She rocks!!!

She does do great work. Thanks Becky!

I HIGHLY recommend Kurt Fehr. He and his wife Laura own Captured Image Photography in Carmel. He has an incredible eye and is very creative. The pictures of my children and family are incredible!! www.capturedimagephotography.com

If you just need to refresh your soul go look at the landscape photography of Denis Kelly at www.deniskelly.com. He also does excellent headshots and event photography of all kinds but the photos from Ireland are something else. Enjoy!

I recently had my photo done for my business card and websites. Paul D'Andrea did an amazing job at a very reasonable price. We went downtown to a park, and he got photos that actually make me feel good about myself (who knew it was possible!?). I have gotten so many compliments because it is not the typical Realtor business card picture. Paul is a member here on Smaller Indiana, and I would recommend him to anyone!

<------ See how cute my photo is???

In our advertising agency, there's a large price difference that our client has to consider between iStock and either doing it ourselves or outsourcing locally.

Peronally, if you need creativity and talent you go with a local who has shown past performance. If you don't need, these then you save money and go to a big box. With locals, the risk is higher, but the benefits are greater!

Family portraits, how much do you want to spend? Do you want heirloom images or do you want posed Olan Mills stuff? How old are your kids? Ed at Little Dreamers Studio in the Stutz building does magic with kids.

Don't know about business shots.

Stock images - I have had some really great success with 123RF. Affordable and if you search a coupon you can get a 30, 50 or 100 credit set for a nice discount.
