Michael Vick: Should he be allowed to play professional football?

I am sickened that a professional team has given him another chance.

I'd like to know how other Smoosier's feel. Please share your opinions.

Here's a link to the Summery of the Facts.

I am sickened as well! I hate that he was given a second chance at a professional career. I really don't care that his sentence was served and he did what he was supposed to on that end. I do, however, care that he has deep issues and is allowed back into society. He was only sorry because he got caught, and who really knows how long he did it up to the point of his getting busted. I am sure he sounded sincere and if you believe then he has got you snowed like he has everyone else. He is a bad man, a bad person. I truly believe that.

I think its hilarious how far above the rest of society we elevate athletes. Or I would think it was hilarious, that is if it weren't so disgraceful.

What athletes do is special and has value, but so is what an actuary, gardener, or nurse does for their various constituencies. Yet if Michael Vick was involved in one of those professions instead of football, after his conviction and release he would be virtually unemployable.

How many companies would take the legal risk of hiring a violent, 240+ lb felon to work in their midst? It would be utterly unthinkable--and probably many of the same people saying Vick has "paid his debt to society" wouldn't bat an eyelash at him being excluded if his career didn't involve professional sports.

But because he's an athlete and can throw a football and run fast, he gets to "suffer" earning (at least) 10-12 times more than an average citizen to be a third-string backup.

Vick. Should he be allowed to play in the NFL? Since the NFL doesn't have any rules that would block him from playing he should be allowed to play. Do I want to see him playing??? NO !! I was not surprised that someone signed him to play for them. I think the Eagles organization should look at a high class team like the Colts and take some lessons. The Colts don't put up with garbage like Vick, and that's what he is, garbage. All that money and he still made the decision to kill and abuse dog after dog. I think that he is sick, and I think that the Eagles are sick for hiring that type of a person. These players are role models for the children of our country, and they know that when they enter the NFL. Vick made a choice, and just because he sat in a jail cell or paid a few fines it doesn't make me forget what kind of person he is, what kind of role model he is, not a very good one at all. If I was an Eagle's fan I would be very dissappointed in the owners for bringing a person like Vick on to my team, and I surely would not attend any of their games. Unfortunately, there will always be teams like the Eagles that will hire people like Vick. Vick is a disgrace to the game, as well as any other pro player that commits any type of crime.

hello people.....why is this even a thread? The guy served time in a federal prison. He paid his deed. Why should he now NOT be allowed to gain employment? Do we want all ex-con's to be unemployable? That would be great for society, our tax dollars & the already present problem of over crowding in prisons. We need more involvement in faciliting & mentoring ex-cons so they can provide value to society post incarceration.

Do we want all ex-con's to be unemployable?

Two things:

First, you missed the boat there: Just about all violent ex-cons are already unemployable--Companies simply will not take the chance of an employee being attacked and possibly killed on their premises by somebody that they knew to be a violent felon but hired anyway. Even non-violent felons have a difficult-time finding work after prison. Whether this constitutes a "fair" system or not is debatable.

Second, you missed the larger point which is this: What makes a football player exempt from this? Why should Vick get special-privileges other convicts don't get? And make no mistake--an NFL roster-spot is a PRIVILEGE, not a right. You have the right to work, you do not have the right to a half-million dollar taxpayer subsidized salary.
