Making people and ideas findable

Insulted by Ebonics - Do you unknowingly stereo type other people?

As many of you know I was recently in the hospital for an asthma attack. While I was there, I had a male nurse who looked at me and instantly addressed me as “girl” in slang. You have probably guessed the nurse was white. I felt insulted and stereo typed. I am sure that he meant no harm, but nevertheless, I did not appreciate being addressed in that manner by someone I do not know. I am here to say, it is NOT acceptable to address African-Americans that you do not know in Ebonics. I embrace my heritage and our vernacular. I use slang with my friends, but if you don’t know me like that, don’t address me like that.

Do you think that I am being over sensitive? If you are white, do you address African-Americans differently? If you are African-American, does it insult you when whites address you in Ebonics when they don’t know you? Let me know what you think.

Not in the squared circle, he isn't.
"Sweetie", urban slang or a term of endearment>
You're funny Cissi...
For some reason, people always tell me that!

I started my group. We can all use a little comic relief and we can get as raw as we want.

Everyone needs and outlet.

Now - back to topic!
Actually, Chris, the term "Ebonics" defining the slang destruction of the English language commonly attributed to ghettos and Black People may have come into use in the 1970, but Ebonics as you all know it came as a surprise to our people because we have been using it all along. Heck, just like June Teenth! We just didn't know?

June Teenth would be considered an Ebonic term. I was introduced to that as a holiday when I moved to Texas in the 1970''s.

Does anyone know what June Teenth is?

Victoria, this discussion has just evolved!
Actually, before this exchange, I had not heard the term "Ebonics" in a while. Who made up that word, anyway???????????????????????

I would still like to know if anyone is familiar with the holiday "June Teenth"?
The Emancipation Proclamation was to go into effect in July of 1863.

There were certain areas of the south where black people did no hear about what they were freed for two and a h...

Where I got to Texas, it was a full-fledged celebration, celebrated just at the 4th of July. By the time I returned to Indiana, the concept of June Teenth had made it here. That was in 1986.

June Teenth can be considered an Ebonic term.

See Victoria, I brought it back around!!!!!
Thanks, Chris.

That Google made me go " "OMG!"

and, thanks to everyone else. I do have to get to work!

Thjere are people who are counting on me oput there. I have been so busiy lately that I have missed the intereaction here at SI.

This discussion has been enlightening, engaging, entertaining and just downright fun. I now have to go out into the world and help people. That doesn't mean I won't come up on another computer and have something to say.

Buy the way, would anyone like to donate a 100 ft Ethernet cord or an or a WIFI connect to a fledgling organization that will have offices and a grandfathered 501c3 by the end of the week?

Yes, June Teenth - It is a Texas thing.. June 19. My understanding is that was they day news of the emancipation proclamation reach Texas, significantly after much of the rest of the country heard the news.

Things are bigger in Texas, just not always faster
You're also talking about something that happened almost 150 years ago. Not like we got the email when Lincoln sent it out nor did we catch the CNN broadcast.

Not to mention that what Lincoln did was completely illegal. He issued a proclimation declaring a law over a country that he did not even preside over. This happened after the Confederacy has seceeded from the Union and the Confederacy had their own government.

Basically, this is like Obama trying to make a law over Venezuela, IN ANY FORM OR FASHION.

The funny thing is, Lincoln's primary focus on this was NOT to free the slaves, but was to cause dissent in the southern states and weaken them. This is proved because the Emancipation Proclimation did not cover the Northern slave-holding states.

It was Abraham Lincoln's declaration that all slaves would be permanently freed in all areas of the Confederacy that had not already returned to federal control by January 1863. The ten affected states were individually named in the second part. Not included were the Union slave states of Maryland, Delaware, Missouri and Kentucky. Also not named was the state of Tennessee, which was at the time more or less evenly split between Union and Confederacy.

Juneteenth is also celebrated in 31 states, not just Texas.

Here's a link if you'd like to get the REAL information on Jeneteenth: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juneteenth
I'm from Texas and I know what Juneteenth is. In fact, I was astounded that many blacks in the North don't know what Juneteenth was when I moved up here. There are MANY, MANY folks that treat Juneteenth as a holiday and a few even close up shop for the day.
In Operation "OpenUP!" we open the line of communications in more ways that one. Opening minds. Opening Hearts, Building Relationships. We target a cell phone outreach program, but we touch peoples lives in so may ways as a resource network.
