Smaller Indiana

Making people and ideas findable

Friends of Smaller Indiana and Fellow Gormandizers,

I'm currently compiling a list of what YOU think is Indy's Best restaurants. I realize Best is subjective and there are many categories (Fine, Casual, Fast Casual, etc...). It's all up to you and your vote counts. You can elect to give me one choice, your top three, ten, or fifty. You can even give me your top fare in all categories if you wish. Also, an explanation why these are your faves are welcome too.

Essentially, this is what I'm looking for:
1. Provide your favorite restaurant(s). Dives. Diners, Drive-ins, Local or Chains. It all counts.
2. Why should I eat there? What should I eat there?
3. Geography Consideration: Greater Indianapolis Area (Marion and all connecting surrounding counties only).
4. Please give your unbiased opinion. In other words, I'd rather you be a genuine customer than an owner/investor.

For your participation, I'm going to throw a Happy Hour Party (on my dime!) at one of these fine establishments. Yes, you read that correctly -- my dime! The results will be posted on Smaller Indiana and on my company site by the end of next month. I'll choose the SI Happy Hour location, date, time and availability at the same time I post the results.

Thanks again fellow Gormandizers and Bon Appetit, Cheers, LeChayim, Salut, and so on....

Great Idea.

Casual Restaurant Pub on the West Side is The Boathouse Grill off of 56th and High School Owners actually made a pub where the quality of the food they prepare is the driver as opposed to late hours and alchohol sales although the environment is definitely a stay and enjoy the game type of place. All their sandwhiches are great portions, the italian beef is fantastic as is the burger. Awesome place to watch games, local favorite for people that live on the west side and serious attention to the quality food they serve. They also make great dinner burrito's. One night a week they have a steak offering (dont get me wrong they are not a steak house) but small filet, twice baked and garlic bread for a great price so I find it a perfect place to grab a decent dinner and a beer all at the same place. If you interested in hosting any type of party there, let me know. I know the people very well and I am sure they would be interested in organizing something with you at a great price to get the exposure. They have been written up in Indy Monthly and I believe the Star, both very favoribly.

Just my two cents, obviously biased but if you stop in for lunch some day you will see what I am talking about.

Thai Orchid. It just opened not too long ago and they are located behind Charleston's restaurant on 82nd. It blows thai taste away! Fantastic food, not too expensive (average $10,99) and a very nice atmosphere.

Many years ago when I lived in Dallas, there was a very fine local restaurant which always had outstanding food and outstanding service to match. No matter the occasion, time of year, time of day or how long it had been between visits, we could always count on it whenever we wanted the best. To me it set the standard for excellent dining. To this day that is how I judge a restaurant. As I write this only two local restaurants come to mind which have been here for many years, have always had consistently excellent food and great service - nope, I'm not talking about St. Elmo's. I'm speaking of Santorini's in Fountain Square and Ocean World on W. 86th Street. If I think of others, I'll post them.

I whole-heartedly agree with Ocean World. It's our favorite sushi place!

I really liked Santorini's last week too.

Brunch - Taste or Hoaglins To Go . Both have good breakfast and lunch options. At Taste I LOVE the CB& G (aka cheddar biscuits and gravy) or any of their sandwhiches. Especially the bacon, avocado and tomato. And you have to try the pommes fritas. At Hoaglins I prefer the vanilla challah bread french toast. I am not an eggs or chicken salad person, but I hear both are amazing. Both have similar feels and draw fun crowds to people watch on a Sunday morning.

Sandwiches - Ripple Bagel Deli (Or broad ripple bagel) Largest menu in town (it takes up the whole wall and then some) And the best service in town. You cannot go wrong here. Any time of the day it will hit the spot.

Pasta - Agios: I never remember how much I like this place until I go again. The tortellini is my standby.

Pizza: Of course you have to have Bazbeouz in Indy - my favorite is the Quatra formagio. MMM ricotta. Then I also would have to stand by Datsa Pizza - but make sure you get extra cheese.

Pub: Chatham Tap and Broadripple Brewpub - Both have a wide variety of offerings, almost all of which are good. At Chatham for something different you must try the Apple melt. Brewpub get the beer cheese!

And of course what would Indy be without Yats. I love food. I am sure I could name others, but this is just what popped to mind first.

Ok I was reading the comments and I don't believe anyone listed the Elbow Room yet. This is my absolute favorite restraunt in Indy. It's on Pennsylvania and North Street. I like when I go in there and they know mine and my husband's drinks before we have to say them:) You MUST try their spinnach and artichoke dip...so good. Also, before the economy hit my husband and I could get dinner before 7:00 and two drinks each for under $25.00. Now it's still cheap just not super cheap!
