Making people and ideas findable

Dan Zarrella just released a report that reveals patterns in the way Re-Tweets work. One thing he noticed is that most Re-Tweets contain hyper-links, but the ones most often re-tweeted do not use TinyURL to shorten the links. Instead, they use bit.ly or other tools that make even shorter URLs. Zarrella has studies several aspects of Re-Tweeting and offers a free report on his findings here.

One reason that bit.ly is so high up on the usage list is that Twitter bought bit.ly and made it the default URL shortener for all non-shortened links.

One tip for tweeting with the purpose of getting retweeted is to make sure your original tweet can be easily retweeted without it being modified. Meaning, make sure that there are enough characters left to add "RT: @yourusername " in front of your original tweet. This, of course, is easy to figure but different for everyone depending on the length of their username. I'm actually surprised that some Twitter clients haven't started warning you when you approach your "optimum retweet length" (most warn you when you approach 140 characters).

Bit.ly is the default shortener, so no surprise there.
