Making people and ideas findable

We are thinking about not even starting the land line at the new house. That means we need something other than dial up to connect to that internet thingie. We are thinking about DSL. We are not gamers, nor are we looking at downloading movies. We just need something to get out to email and do gneral surfing. What do you all that are smarter on this sort of thing than me reccomend? AT& T looks like some decent rates but it is AT&T.

My wife and I do not watch much TV, and we do not have a land line phone. If you get DSL, you need to pay the local connect fee of about $20. So it will be closer to $40 for basic DSL. If you want to get cable (we have Comcast), you are looking at around $50-60, but the (burst) speed is 3-4 times as much, plus they throw in the Basic cable (15 channels maybe?). With U-Verse, you have to get a $75+ package.

If that is all you will just be using it for that then get the ATT DSL. You may be able to get "naked DSL", also known as a dry loop, or unbundled DSL. This type of DSL requires no phone line to run over and is available is many areas of Indiana. If not, get just basic phone service and tell the processor that the land line will not be used for calls. They should then issue you the minimal POTS line ( plain old telephone service) so that the ADSL circuit can run over it.

Either of these will saved you the most money.

Good old ATT gives this for my address:

"Our system indicates that our DSL service, AT&T High Speed Internet, is not available at your location."

Nothing like living in the 12th largest city and not being able to have service.

We thought we were going to get u-verse but the install tech that came out on Saturday was not able to get a signal and now we were just told our order was canceled because we are too far from the box. Can I sue for false advertising since we have three mailings from them stating that it was now available and that their website says that it is available at our address.

I don’t know about the suing thing as I am not a lawyer, however if you are not in range of the box you will not be happy with the service. The signal will be so low that you will have multiple troubles. I hate AT&T as I think if you do not watch them they will bill you for things that don't exist. That was reaffirmed last week when a customer called me to ask what I thought a part of his bill was and I had no idea. Called them and none of their agents could tell me. They did drop that part off of his bill.

Now to answer your question. DSL will be fine for what you are wanting to do. I have cable and that would be the best you could have. With everything going Digital, you might consider getting the very basic cable and also include the internet service along with it. They are getting more reasonable in pricing. You can also do you phone through there as well. Either option you choose I would have a basic phone line for emergency. Both cell and internet can come into the 911 call center and not show your address making response time slower. If you choose not to get a land line; call the non-emergency number and ask to run a check on the how your number shows up. They can adjust so that your number comes up as your address. We did a trail of our community last summer and found multiple houses that needed to be adjusted for this reason, but now it will increase our response times to the community.

Probably more info then you wanted, but those are my thoughts. Good luck!
