If you are getting some kind of paid tv service (cable, dish, u verse) I would get your internet from there. They generally run a good combo deal that makes it cheaper than buying each.

We don't watch enough tv for paid tv to be worth it.

if you are going tv and phoneless it limits your options somewhat. You basically will have 3 options, and just figure out which is cheapest.

1) dsl
2) cable modem from whichever provider you have
3) since you've used it before and I assume are willing to live with the limitations, you could look into getting a phoneline and dialup internet. Even if you use the line for nothing but internet it might be cheaper.

I would never be able to use dialup again, but I ask for a lot out of my internet connection. You will just have to put in a little bit of leg work and find out what each option costs, as they vary based on location and provider. I would say that cable gives the best bang for your buck.

ive had dish network for several months now and havent had any significant interruptions. Been through snow, heavy rain, heavy winds, and hail with no outages. Maybe Im lucky, maybe yours was set up poorly.. i dont know. On occasion the picture pixilates for a second or two, but that happens with cable as well and its very minor. I thought I would never switch to a dish, but with the whole CBS thing a while back it was the deciding factor. Ive quite enjoyed it. I love the price of it all as for a good price I get 200 channels, including nfl and big 10.

yes, all of the channels were available to us, but it was going to cost a lot more. big 10 and nfl were on different packages so ordering both would have been rough. I personally get a better value with no worse service with dish.

I cant explain why you had such crappy reception and I dont have that issue. The only thing I can think of is that your dish wasnt properly alligned.

I have Att Uverse and I can not say enough good things about it!
Since it is a fairly New Service they are offering some good deals.

Hi Michael!

I think DSL will require a phone line for the service anyway. If you want to avoid both land line phone and cable, try checking with your wireless provider. I know awhile back Verizon was offering a USB "card" for internet service and a very reasonable package. Most wireless providers offer very competitive packages, so other providers may have similar options.

Mike,

You can always go the cable route. They'll run basic cable (i.e. channels 2 - 19) plus high-speed Internet for a pretty reasonable price. Then you can just use cell phones or Skype for your phone service. You can always watch shows you want on Hulu.com or on the station's website.

We do have AT&T U-Verse and I love it.

Depending on where you live, I can get you set up with Comcast broadband quickly. ATT has DSL and I believe you'll need a phone line to get that service. Comcast has high speed BB and although it may be overkill for your needs, you'll be better off with it. Considering the pricing is comparable, you might as go with something more robust in the event you need the speed. If you ever watch videos online such as with Netflix, you'll appreciate why you went the cable route. I've had it all and cable BB has been incredible for me.
