Making people and ideas findable

Found this on Fast Company - You'd think people would know better than to share damaging info online. Alas, no. Not even close.

On the Internet, anything that can be used to act stupid will be used to act stupid. Like the bank intern who told the boss he had a family emergency and then posted photos of himself at a Halloween party on Facebook. Now that Twitter has become the favored medium for oversharing, so too has it become the best way to get fired, double quick. Resume Bear just did a quick Twitter search, and posted 30 tweets likely to haunt their authors. We've excerpted a few below. The rest are here.

So what are you seeing out there? Are people wising up? Are you seeing more or less risky personal stuff posted online these days. Do tell here

I hear the stories, but I haven't witnessed them first hand. My practice is simple on Twitter, or elsewhere. Follow quality people and delivery quality content. When you do this, you tend not to get in harm's way. Quality doesn't necessarily mean ALL business. Just be yourself and if yourself is publicly bashing your boss, employer, colleagues, etc..., then I suggest you take a look in the mirror and change your habits.

Everyone is watching now. Your legacy is being built for all to witness whether you like it or not.

I feel I should on this site as I really am trying to network, etc. On other sites, it doesn't matter because it's not like I'm using my real name or anything. But, on this site, I am most definitely using my real name.

My mother always taught me never to say or do anything I wouldn't want posted on a billboard. Online posts are today's version of yesterday's billboards, and they never go away... it's amazing how many people don't seem to "get" that.

I do think people are wising up in general... but there are fools in every crowd.

This site is nice because people are using their real names so they have to be respectful (or it WILL come back to bite them). But, I don't understand why people think it's okay to use a fake name and then be rude or hostile just because they can. I suppose my life philosophy - that you get back what you give out - plays into my approach, but for many, the anonymity they perceive online is license to let all the ugly hang out, and then some.

Oh yes, I most certainly do watch what I post!!! After posting a few nonsense quips on Facebook, I figured out quickly that I needed to watch myself. That sense of humor of mine!! Great fun for me and folks like me, but could really gross some people out. Other than that, I pretty much treat people on line like I do in person--respectfully, kindly, and in a way that I would want to be treated. I took ol' Cowboy Bob to heart when I was a wee whippersnapper;
"And remember kids, if you can't say something nice about someone, don't say anything at all." I don't like to be a purveyor of crappy energy. What I put out returns to me, and I would rather find something good about someone than look for their worst.

I only put things online that I would be willing to say onstage in a crowded room. The Internet never forgets, even if something is deleted.

Well, I am share information online in more depth that I feel is really worth discussing with a person in a one-to-one discussion simply because normal conversation with one individual can only travel to the depth of their (or my) own experiences and understanding. There are people that I know I cannot talk to about business, the stock market, or various other issues - they are not "into" those topics.

As for posting dumb stuff, well I do that, and also broadcast online live and perhaps will act or say things that would not be appropriate in a conference room atmosphere. But if I can't express the different views and random ideas or idiosyncrasies that I may have here online - I guess my only other option is to keep things "inside".

It's nice to know that others are not perfect, sure if you are hiding criminal activities it's probably smart to change your last name once in a while or go by an alias - but I am not considering criminal activity in my life - Ha.

Anyway to answer the question - I was happy to find out that the Domino's Employees that put a buger on a Dominos Sandwich during a video that was later online got booted - I have a business identity and also a more laid back normal identity that may not be professional enough to be considered "smart PR" - but Will Ferrell may even have a very level and intelligent business side to his personality that we never see....

I recently posted my first series of "crappy car" photos on twitpics; after spending 5 weeks in Miami this winter and coming back to little ole Kokomo, I realized that here in Kokomo some folks don't have the cashflow to buy a supernice auto and take it to he carwash daily like they do in Miami. So after returning to town I had the idea to post "Only in Kokomo" Series of Photos: the first series was Cars in town that didn't pass for the type of autos that you happen to see in Miami. The next series may be called "Homeless in Kokomo" - not to make fun of course, strickly a side of me that is totally sarcastic - yes many people don't think that making fun of people is right, oh well, Saturday Night Live was a staple of my culture growing up.

By the way here is the link for the first photo series, "Only in Kokomo" junker cars that people still drive - I think it's a hoot, oh well.
Only in Kokomo, Junkers You Wouldn't Be Caught Dead In

Have a fun week.
