Making people and ideas findable

So....I have noticed more business women sporting miles of cleavage at networking events this summer. One chick's was so just out there that I bet her temperature controls were visible when she bent over. From an image consulting perspective, this is a killer for building business. I feel men don't take us seriously when we are showing almost as much mammary as a pole dancer at P.T.'s.

What do you think? Guys, how does a massive boob display affect your opinion of business women? Ladies, what are your thoughts?

Beautiful breasts alone are enough to get a man's attention, but NOT enough to gain an advantage that leads to success.

People do judge each other very quickly, but there are so many variables here that could derail this -how should we say - MAM-VANTAGE. Noticing her physical appearance is link ONE of a lightning-fast chain of events that connects to just the physical interaction stage (handshake) of a basic introduction. Of course there's more to achieving a successful sale beyond that. I can't see the acknowledgement of breasts simply overriding EVERY other potnetial "deal breaker" like price, need, color, etc.

What if the fourth link of this chain is something that might be a deal-breaker no matter where it is? Let's grant this woman has great overall appearance and figure - all in line with what this particular man finds attractive. But when she stands upright, she smiles revealing a toothless, canker-sore infested mouth? While this is something the man doesn't notice AT FIRST (the boobs), the sores will still lead to a failure. Bottom line: an ugly woman fails as does our messed-up-mouth-woman, just at different rates.

Now what if this woman was "pleasantly plump," has an attractive smile, genuine look in her eyes and knows her product inside and out? Her advantage is not having a disadvantage! She got past the snap-judgement phase, past the handshake phase, and all the way to the sale.

I know this may sound raw, but I do think many scenarios unfold this way.

Mike,

Thanks for being "raw". I love reading what men think of this question, and women too. Some women have felt it is just fine to leave the girls out for some air, while others don't. Interesting responses, all of them.

Just curious, are you LESS likely to do business with a female parading her sweater puppies in a tight and revealing shirt? Do you find yourself thinking poorly of women who just stick 'em all right out there for the whole world to ogle? I am referring to ladies who have massive amounts of cleavage hanging out, and/ or super, duper tight sweaters.

While I like to talk about boobs as much as the next guy, I think the question of a boob-vantage is kind of out of context. Boobs only might honestly help in some circumstances sure. But it would also hurt in others.

This will sound like I'm splitting hairs but I am being honest - I am more willing to do business with someone who is engaging and confident and is genuinely (or artificially I guess) interested in what I have to say. My perception is more often than not that person happens to be attractive than butt-ugly because the battle between looks and smarts already happened behind the scenes with a hiring manager or career success to the point where we met in a business transaction.

I love this discussion because of the hoest reactions and I think asking a provacative question brings out more honesty than if you had said "attractiveness" and business. Ironically it comes full circle - I wonder if you're own discussion has drawn more attention because "boobs" in the headline!

Less likely because I feel it's unprofessional.

I've never noticed these types of women before, at least in Indiana as it's very conservative. There is a time and place for everything. And displaying them in business is simply not a good idea.

I don't really judge it that way. If you can do what you say you can do, I could care less what you are showing.

Take this study for what its worth, but I thought of your post a few weeks ago when I heard it. Enjoy.....

Thanks for the study, Steve. I am just feeling so empowered now! LOL My husband says he knew it
all along.

Or maybe it's the inverse: smarter women tend to have higher incomes and can afford to buy their boobs. ;-)

Women buy their own boobS???? I don't know any women who have been to one to pay for their own boobs ;)

thanks for the late afternoon chuckle with your description, felt real good to laugh. But seriously, I do feel that too much presents a bad business image. Men need to follow the same protocol....hate to see a man with too much chest/hair showing and gold necklace(s) displayed

So true ! lolol Seems like we're pretty much agreed - dress for success means dress without too much
boobage showing or hairy chests. What about plumber's crack? I tend to leave the room while they're
working. But no matter how they look when they come through the door, their butts always show while
they work. I only object to being made to pay for the view.
