Bally's Total Fitness closing in Indy--GOOD RIDDANCE!!!

Apparently, Bally's just closed its doors to their Greenwood and I believe Lafayette, In. locations. This is great news for would-be health club goers who might've considered Bally's. It is, without a doubt, the most poorly run health club company in the world. I say that with no reservations. I worked in the health and fitness industry years ago and I've also been an avid gym-goer for a long time so I know all too well just how shady their business practices are. I've heard the horror stories first hand. I remember working at a small independent gym as a sales associate a few years ago and there were times when an ex-Bally's member would come in and they would absolutely not sign any kind of contract because of how Bally's screwed them over. It was quite telling. As far as I'm concerned, the entire company can bite the bullet. What's funny is, they are trying to save face by offering 'No long term contracts'. The nerve.

If you are seeking out a health club, try a well-run independent one. Stay away from chains if you can help it.

Well they must have just liked me so much that they never mentioned it and waived it.

Well, I know for a FACT that they had high rates when they first opened their doors because I interviewed with the District Manager.

I dont know what to tell you....i didnt realize we were talking about what they were when they opened.
Hello Michael,
16 years ago, I had been a member for a short time and then became pregnant. My doctor put me on a high risk pregnancy and told me that under no circumstances was I even to ride a bike, let alone work out. I was at the Lafayette Road location and spoke to the manager at the time regarding my membership. He would not allow me to take a year off of my membership to take care of my pregnancy. I had a letter from my doctor but he said to me "It is a proven fact that working out during your pregnancy will make you a healthier mother so I cannot allow you to take a year off". Needless to say, I walked out of there confused and angry and never went to another gym again.
As with any business, I try to go to the mom n' pop shops vs. large chains anyway. I try to make an effort to give my money to the businesses in my community, people I know and companies that have a good reputation. If I were to ever join a gym again, there is a place called Gymies here in Cicero that would be my first option.

Wow, Vanessa, your story may take the cake. I've heard a lot of bad stories about Bally's but the sheer stupidity of what that manager said to you is proof positive of how poorly run that company is. These are the kinds of people who would step on their grandmother's head for a dollar. Did you try and take up the matter with any of the higher-ups in the company? I hope in some form or another, you are able to stay physically active as it is important to your health. Thank you for sharing your story Vanessa and I'm sorry you had to go through that.

I could not agree more! Ballys is as commercial as a gym can get. Local fitness clubs are the way to go... they actually care about their members!

Bally's also closed their location at Keystone at the crossing. I thought the place was a bit worn, but ok. Then their racquetball court was badly damaged due to a water leak several months ago, and they never fixed it. Racquetball was one of the reasons I rejoined in the first place. Then just a few weeks ago, they sent me a letter that I could get a discount if I renewed six months early. No mention of the pending closing. They'd have been happy to take my money and make it nearly impossible to continue to go. At least now I know why the racquetball court was never repaired! I'm glad I had a very cheap rate and didn't take them up on the renewal. I know the chances are slim, but I'm going to try to get some of my money back.

Wasn't aware of the Keystone @ the Crossing location being closed, Bruce. I only heard about this story because I was watching WTHR 13 news yesterday morning and they ran a segment on it. My first thought was: YIPEE!!!

So, Bruce, if you didn't get a renewal, how/why would you be looking to get any money back? I'm a bit confused with that statement of yours. Did you give them a lump sum of money up front or something? If you gave Bally's money up front in a lump sum you're going to have to take them to court (most likely) to even have a chance at seeing that money again.

While I'm saddened you all have had to endure the poor experiences of Bally's, I'm glad you participated in this thread. Five of us have commented on this thread, and all five have had poor experienes. Says a lot.

I was a member years ago, and re-signed up for $99 per year (payable in advance) as an attempt to cut expenses back in January. We were going to Lifetime. As I see it, Bally's owe me 5 or 6 months, which is about $45, but I don't expect I'll ever see it.

While we're on this topic I have to also give a plug to Peak Performance--I belonged to Cardinal Fitness for several yrs & also checked out LA Fitness, but decided to switch to Peak, partly out of convenience but also to support another locally-owned business. I did not care for the atmosphere at LA & am very happy I switched to Peak Performance--definitely worth checking out if you live on NE side.

Peak performance is great. I also have belonged to L.A. Fitness at 62nd and Keystone and enjoyed it. It was really crowded at times, but as long as you dont go right after work like everyone else you are good to go. I thought they had everything that i needed for a fair price.
