Making people and ideas findable

Have you been worried about all the paper that gets dumped into the landfills? Worried that we're throwing away a perfectly good renewable resource, that we could have been reusing old paper?

Don't worry about it. There's nothing to worry about at all.

Because the Chinese are recycling it.

I was at a green printing and direct mail seminar several months ago hosted by Quality Printing of Anderson, IN. They brought in Daniel Dejan of Sappi Paper, and he gave us the scoop on what happens to our landfills, especially the paper.

It seems the Chinese government is buying our landfills, 40 foot container by 40 ft. container. They're shipping boatloads of our trash over to these small Chinese villages, where entire families are sifting through our junk and breaking it all down and separating it.

Needless to say, lots of Chinese people, including very small children, are being exposed to all kinds of hazardous and toxic chemicals as these families are breaking down our TV sets and computers, looking for the copper wire and other useful components. They're also looking for our paper.

Now you can start worrying.

What are your thoughts? Does your company recycle its paper? Do you buy recycled paper? Did you even know this was an issue?

You bring up a good point of recycling the paper. I also would add that we need to use less paper period. A lot of paper waste is happening in the work environment.

The real question is (like in that car commercial:)) is how do we use less paper. There are number of things you can do, from basics such as reuse everything that can be reused (print on 2 sides of the documents; use old document as scratch paper) to more involved decisions - contact the companies that send you more than one copy of catalogs, etc., to ask them to send you only one and pass it on; Packaging: make a point to purchase goods that use minimal packaging etc

I think we need to help business people to put together an action plan on how they can green up their businesses to reduce waste and save money and DO Something Good. I have vast resources of best practices on making office greener and can share it free with willing listeners.
