Smaller Indiana

Making people and ideas findable

Smoosier Gang:

I am putting together preliminary steps to acquire an old, industrial building to convert to artist's studios. I have a few different buildings I'm considering. Most would handle 20-30 small studios.

My preference would be to have the building in the downtown area of Indianapolis...within a 2mile or so radius of the Circle and on a bus line.

If anyone has interest in renting 500-5000 square feet of space well suited for painting, wood working, photography, printmaking, sculpture... you name it, so long as it's legal... drop me a line.

I'd like to have a get-together/brainstorming session about the idea in the first week of June.

Let's discuss...

Are you looking at any area in particular Joe? I'm curious!

You need to talk to Doug Arnholter with Broad Ripple Art & Design - I met him at Brugge a couple months ago and he was serious about doing just this - and had a building in mind on the near north side area.
You can find him at http://www.broadrippleart.com/contact.html
Um...I'm in right?
Can't meet tomorrow btw...completely slammed. hope you had a good weekend.

Joe -- I love your idea. The Arts Council of Indianapolis could help you generate buzz among the other local artists for your studio venture. You may also want to talk to the Indiana Arts Commission. Have you already considered those as resources?

Count me interested. My garage doesn't work well for a sculpture studio. Good daylighting would be a must. Downtown, especially near north would be great.

Duh, guess I read too fast and missed that part about proximity to the circle. Let me know if you get involved with something up here North of 465?

I'm interested and like your idea of a location, N of circle preferably

I think this is a fantastic idea Joe! Let me know when the brainstorming begins, I'd love to be in on creating some great possiblities for the local art scene.

I manufacture a block that is fireproof, has sound deadening characteristics and is impermiable to mold and mildew...we have tested for impact at greater than 300 mph without so much as a divot in damage to the assembly -

This might be a good material for you to consider as a potential when building your separate units...

The material would protect everyone's areas of artistic endeavor in case of fire, accident caused by flying material, wind damage in extreme weather, etc.

Material shown below is a wall built of our Liberty StoneWorks material...it does not allow heat to penetrate, so cooling the facility will be greatly enhanced! Likewise, heating the structure will see a decrease in energy costs (in a commercial setting) of around 80%.

We can also provide custom colors to meet your individual tastes -

Let me know if I can share additional information with you!
