Smaller Indiana

Making people and ideas findable

I'm struggling to figure out what the friends feature is used for on Smaller Indiana. On any other social network I have been a part of, the friends feature is used to narrow down the information I want to receive. In other words, I only have to read the blog posts, forum questions, etc. from my friends if I don't want to weed through the entire social network.

You can even take it a step further and protect your page so that only friends can see it.

Either I can't find it or there is no such feature on Smaller Indiana, or Ning for that matter. Is there a way I can get the RSS feed of blog posts or forum questions from just my friends vs. the entire network?

I thought it was for bragging rights. How many friends do you have?

my SI friends consist of people i've known for years, people i've not seen for years, and some that i've just met while on SI. in all cases, it demonstrates some semblance of a relationship, which is what we're all trying to build and nurture here.

the "friends" thing may not offer much technical functionality in how we use SI, but i think the emotional functionality is quite strong.

Your friend,
Jon ;-)

Leave it to you Jon to trump my technical card with the usability card. LOL!

Your friend as well,

This is what I took it as -- someone I want to/have formed a relationship with. I may be a little indiscriminate in my friending, but I do try to only select people I have something in common with and will want to communicate with later. Sort of like bookmarking a page I will want to go back to later.

As someone new to Indiana hoping to make a few new friends, I guess I see the "add as a friend"/"accept as a friend" functions as giving or getting permission to contact and communicate directly with people on SI. Even though there are no technical ramifications, it seems like a courtesy to request a friendship before sending e-mails, planning a get-together or talking about work-related partnerships. I also look for people with whom I would have something in common -- similar work background, career goals or industry exposure.

I use it to narrow down my search for people I talk with regularly. It's easier for me to look through my friends than the 1300+ members (maybe 1400 or 1500 by the time I push the add reply button...)

You must be friends to send an email directly, so I will request that connection with someone i want to send a note to through the system.

if you choose, you can make videos and other posts only viewable to friends.

For me, I tend to be an open networker, and usually accept and send friend reqeusts easily and would rather have the connection in advance, rather than trying to set it up when i have something specific I want to send.

Excellent point. I'm getting an email notice everytime someone I have NO association with does anything on smaller Indiana. If I get an answer as to how to limit this, I'll let you know.

Actually.... the only time that I receive an email is if there is a reply on a thread that I have posted on. The option to unsubscribe from that particular thread is available so you don't get several emails saying, "so and so has replied to the such and such forum"..... I like receiving the notifications though. Even though they may not be my "friend", I like being notified that someone may be responding to what I have said, and also the ability to keep up with the comments on the post from other people.

Friends.... I'll add most anyone that requests my friendship. I'm a friendly kind a gal!
