Making people and ideas findable

Pat Coyle

How do you feel about Fox News, tonight's debate and text message polls?

We normally try to focus our daily discussions on one topic, but with the big debate tonight there are simply too many juicy things to talk about. So we've picked three questions inspired by this photo:

1. Is Fox News more or less partisan than, say, NBC?
2. Will tonight's debate make any difference in the way America votes?
3. Do you, or does anyone you know actually participate in text message polls?

1. Fox could not be biased enough to offset every other station/channel.
2. Debates do little because they are scripted. If you want a good debate, do a true call in debate where the candidates do not know the question ahead, they must answer in less than 100 words, and the called has a right to ask one follow up question to each answer.
3. No and no, and any text message poll will therefore not be representative of the 215 million Americans. Text message polls are overwhelmingly an under 30 thing, and while a very important group, not the largest and most diverse group out there. Let's not forget also that a poll to have any statistical validity must be able to prove a sample that matches the population within statistical norms. Without that proof, the "poll" is a for entertainment purposes only.
