Making people and ideas findable

I've been wrestling over the definition of the word: blog.
I would like to get an opinion.

I am mostly looking for personal opinions on the definition.

What does everyone think?

A blog is just a mechanism for people to post thoughts on the internet in a manner that is visible to readers, with or without the ability to respond.

Kyle,
Several respondents indicated they have multiple blogs. Arguably, I do too (if I count SI). Do you have any thoughts about the relationship (if any) between business and personal blogs? Does one inadvertently influence the other?
Cheers,

It is all dependent on how much emphasis you put in your personal brand when it comes to the business.

I have my blog url as kylelacy.com because I am branding MYSELF and my BUSINESS here in Indianapolis. It is the whole trusted advisor concept.

It is important to add some personality and authenticity to your blog posts. Although, there is a fine line to draw between personal and business.

BLOG: (n) 1) a Babbling LOG, often interactive, of personal opinion which is published online at semi-regular intervals as regards to specific incidents or events related to the author’s targeted subject(s) of interest. 2) an online rant!

Beyond the technical definition, I think a blog has to be defined by its purpose. One definition doesn't fit all blogs, even when you begin categorizing them as "personal" and "business."

My main reason for blogging is to build credibility as a writer among potential clients. However, I also do it because I enjoy writing and can't get enough. I share my opinions about topics in a manner that relates to my business. I also get quite a kick out of visitors and comments. So while mine is a business blog, I get a great deal of personal satisfaction from it.

Good thoughts Cindy! I think we all get personal satisfaction from blogging. Sometimes blogging can be an extremely egocentric process. :)

A few things to consider before joining Smaller Indiana:
1. Please use your real name (first and last) when you sign up, or we cannot open your account

2. Please do not use logos or commercial images for your profile photo

3. Events should be posted in the events calendar

4. You can post pretty much anything you want on your own personal page (self promotion, etc), and you can change the style of your personal profile page to reflect your corporate identification if you so choose.

5. Please keep all comments civil and polite. It's OK to feel strongly about a subject, and it's OK to be critical of ideas, but please refrain from personal attacks of any kind.

If you witness or experience any issues, please contact admin@smallerindiana.com and we will look into the matter.

6. Smaller Indiana is supported by its members, and by corporate sponsors. If you're interested in learning more about sponsorship, please call Pat Coyle at 317 332 7878.
