Making people and ideas findable

I've been wrestling over the definition of the word: blog.
I would like to get an opinion.

I am mostly looking for personal opinions on the definition.

What does everyone think?

I blog, therefore I am?

That's a bumper sticker.

Hi Kyle!

As a non-blogger (so far anyway), my blog reader viewpoint is that a blog is a virtual version of the Op Ed page from a newspaper without the censorship of traditional journalism. Many of the authors are well versed on their subjects and provide lots of facts, while others are using it as a platform to voice an opinion to either gain support or at the very least get the readership to think (something a large chunk of our society does very little of). Additionally, because it is virtual and interactive, blogs provide an interactive forum that satisfies our society's need for immediate gratification in the comment section following the original author's piece.

Just my 2 cents (add a couple of bucks & you can get a cup of coffee :))

Ok, I'm writing this not having read the other comments, so if I duplicate, I'm sorry.

We all know what it is technically, but what it can be depends on the blogger, their goals, and their community of readers. So while it can be many things, here is what my blogs are for me (in no particular order):

- a outlet for my writing
- a way to build/extend my brand
- a way to start or extend conversations
- a marketing tool
- a PR tool
- a relationship building tool
- a tool for meeting other great people (bloggers and otherwise)
- a method for getting (growing numbers of) books - because others want me to review them.
- an ocassional source of procrastination (when I'm not writing enough).

Now I will go read all of the other comments. Hope this is helpful Kyle.

Kevin :)

We think similarly!

For me, it's a tool for expression where my individuality and ideas can be shared with the public in a very personal forum. It's a way to use internet technology for greater human connection... and what better use could there be for technology?!

Emily, I know for you it's been a way for you to build a personal fan base within the fan base of your employer. I think more than "just" a human connection, it's a way to put a human face on an organization and give it a voice. For some corporate blogs, like Angie's List Blue House Blog, it's a way for users to meet the people who work inside the company.

Everybody who's responded has seemed to hit the nail on the head, but they've tended to use personal associations to blogging. I define blogging in the same way that I've seen it defined on most of the responses, but also see it as a great business tool, as well as a personal outlet/opportunity for recording thoughts and ideas. Kevin Eikenberry addresses this pretty well on your blog, as does my December '07 article in the Morgan County Business Leader. The article speaks to it to a limited extent - as much space would allow. Regardless, it's a way to communicate with any market, whether it's your family, friends, the personal world, clients or consumers. Thanks for the chance to comment, Kyle!

Kyle,

Hmmmm. Interesting question. I'd say it's an attempt by a person who assumes others might be intetrested in what he/she thinks to share those thoughts.

A website where frequent, personal thoughts are published on one more multiple topics.

I tend to avoid use of the word blog in conversation unless I'm talking with folks who understand it's use and purpose.

A 'blog' is nothing more than a method of providing information on the web. Although, this method is easily update-able and has the ability to be subscribed to.

Used to be, we had to build sites by hand the hard way and connect the content directly to the structure of the site. Low and behold, CSS has stripped that relation. We now can have a design that the content gets put into rather than building the content and design concurrently.

Now we have websites with easily update-able content that people have the ability to subscribe to. CNN does it. ABC does it. Reuters does it. So do a billion gajillion everybodies -- even me -- sharing our most intimate bits with the masses and future employers.

Anyhoo.
