Making people and ideas findable

I've been wrestling over the definition of the word: blog.
I would like to get an opinion.

I am mostly looking for personal opinions on the definition.

What does everyone think?

Strategy without results? HA. My strategy? Be funny. My results? Laughter. I think I've made my point. Good day to you sir.

I SAID GOOD DAY!

Reading through all the comments, I would say that they all express how I would define the word. I think you can take it even further and separate it out into personal and profession! But I would go with what my fellow SI.com friends say below!

I use it more or less as a creative outlet. I don't think a commentary on the magazine "Girls and Corpses" could be interpreted as having any real social value. Occasionally, it's a way for me to put my thoughts down and maybe bounce some ideas off of others.

IF we parse the word, we should REMEMBER that it ORIGINALLY implied a contemporaneous record which is well-accepted in personal AND professional, e.g. legal & scientific, circles. Of course, it's evolved well beyond this, BUT I wanted to make this point so that it accommodates micro-BLOGging, e.g. Twitter, which is how I personally blog & which (I guess) some do NOT consider to be blogging.

I like Henry's Definition!

It is the place where I can build my credibility as an expert in my field and link to other experts. I can explore articles, do book writing research, promote others, share newest trends and information.

I also helps me to market my writing and my speaking.

Not sure this is a definition so..........best of luck!

Hmm, my first thought was digital diary as well, however a diary is usually private...or so we hope!
So now I think my take away of a blog is an open airing and sharing of thoughts, feelings and opinions. Be well!

For me a blog is an on-line soap box, or an open notebook that addresses topics in which the author has an interest.

Bernard,
I too think "soap box" is a good way to describe this. My blog is (or should be) my opinion on topics I want to discuss.

I second this Bernard.

I guess I would define BLOG as sharing information about a topic. I first started reading blogs when my niece joind the Army and was headed for Iraq. I wanted to learn about military experiences in Iraq straight from the horses mouth - not from our normal biased media outlets. I found an Army journalist who blogged about life in Iraq through the eyes of soldiers actually there: http://desert-smink.blogspot.com/. Then I created a blog when my sisters and I were sharing much of the same info via email. Our blog is private and we go there to gab, share news and calendars. I like the IndyStar extended conversations about hot topics also. I've seen outstanding business uses for blogs such as: http://www.esourcingforum.com/ as well.

I think the definition is a moving target, one that changes often, as new blogs are created

I haven't figured out what a blog is yet - Business or Social so I have several, and post comments where I think they fit best.

Lorraine,
Yes, I agree: A moving target with a definition that also varies depending on the use "environment" of the blog.
Cheers,
j
